Allowing clients to photocopy your license, why?

schrodingers cat:

peirre:
Everytime I turn up on a job my licence, digi card and site authorisation / induction card are copied.
Then a 5 page form has to be filled in, repeating the same info thats clearly visible in the original documents
ie: licence number, digi card number, expiry dates for licence, digi, and HGV entitlement.
The next step being mooted due to a specific contract, is CRB checks paid for by the client

DHL by any chance?

I thought the same thing.

What’s worse though, if you work a Monday, but not a Tuesday, then a Wednesday. You have to photocopy your licence and fill out that essay on both the Monday and the Wednesday, but if you work Mon, Tue and Wed, then you just do it on the Monday? :unamused:

the best thing to do is get a copy of his/her ID.
if they ask why you want it, just tell them you will hand it to the police if your identity gets used unlawfully.

I’ve handed my licence over plenty of times for photocopying, mostly being told it’s for “insurance purposes”,what i’ve never thought to ask for is the companies DPA policy as explained earlier in this thread.

Luckily, nothing has ever happened as a result of my licence being photocopied, but this has made me think,i only hand my licence over to my employer now every 6 months for copying, and they ring the DVLA for confirmation too.

I suppose you’d be well within your rights not to surrender your licence for copying under the DPA then, but then there’d be no work for you.

in my job make copy every day.but i pass to class 1,class 2 after 09.09.2009.so any drivers who pass after this date must pass test and INITIONAL CPC.so i have done all.if drivers pass driving tests but not done this CPC,so cant drive professionaly or work for company.not legaly.but not one company don t ask me about this card.first when i start work i show this card, but all planers watch for this card, what for dog.company do copy every day,for what reason i dont know, but don t check this card

and if company want check my licence point-it is OK.but why company don t check full time drivers licence eveday.may be they as well get points

Everyday

Thanks to the O/P for raising this. I never thought of it before, but will look into it. I too am at DHL. (PITFA)

So although the DL is illegal to photocopy, that PDF says it’s OK to do it once a year, and you need to get the driver/manager to sign it as well.

Bit different from those companies that want you do get it copied every day you’re in there!!!

Although its a very informative document, it does not say that its illegal to copy, and that comes from a top government department ie DVLA, and it actually explains what way to do it, so just because a museum says they do not copy, it doesnt mean that its illegal, it merely states that departments policy of working.
I must agree that its wrong for companies to copy every day, you have the right to refuse, and lose work. Our company copy licences every 6 months, not a fool proof way of allowing a driver to take a vehicle on the road with so many points, a DD conviction, or a total driving ban, but i agree with the dvla that the best way is to photocopy once, and get drivers to sign a declaration every so often, but as has been said, the system is open to abuse, and can fool most people, except a direct talk with DVLA, but, needs permission from every dri
