well where shall i start? guess what i have a cravan, and im a ( truck driver) and i have been doing both for round about the same time 23 years.yes there are the few that should not be on the PUBLIC highways,as there is the same amount of TRUCK drivers, and vans, cars,oh and those that drive up and down our motorways, pretending to be plastic police, when theres a trafic problem!! .but as far as the truck driving side of things go and caravaners go at least when caravaners pull into a motorway service area they use the toilets provided!!!.lets not jude others to much chaps/and girles. any way merry christmas.
it’s generally accepted by most lorry drivers that the general public have no idea how to act when they’re out on the road, even the simplest of tasks is a problem to some, now when you add a caravan to the equation it gets a whole lot worse.
There are some decent caravanners out there, that’s not in any doubt, but they are far outnumbered by people who have caravans. People who have no idea about weight distribution, people who use unsuitable towing vehicles, people who think the holiday starts as soon as they hitch up & drive with no regard to other road users.
If a form of training was required before hitching up & taking to the roads a lot of the current people who tow caravans would be shocked at how they’re putting the lives of their families & others at risk through their ignorance of things that we, as lorry drivers, know & do as second nature. e.g. weight distribution, that’s the cause of 99% of the accidents they have, the tail wags the dog & then it’s a one way trip to the scene of the accident, simple education would solve this overnight.
Parking in truck parking spots is a real pain, as we know, there’s a serious lack of truck parking spots available & when the few that are there have caravans in them it’s made even worse, drifting off topic slightly (a speciality of mine ) but if you park a lorry in a coach space it’s 250 quid & a clamp, a caravan in a truck space & nobody gives a ■■■■, you may want to consider that it’s one rule for us & no rules at all for anybody else when the robbing swines are ripping you off the next time you use an MSA, now back on topic, the one thing that really gets my goat though is the idiots who tow a caravan with no extra mirrors, how can anybody even think about driving down the road when they have no idea what is happening behind them? They are a lost cause & should be shot in the temple, twice
I think we pick on caravanners because we all think we are very proffesional Truck drivers…I don’t think so, just as all caravanners are not bad drivers, just some, like some truck drivers are bad drivers…Very BAD!!
I do feel very sorry if i see a caravan that his tipped over, irespective of whose fault it is, with children standing on the side of the road crying because their holiday has not even started or it has ended very badly…So if you do pass a flipped caravan don’t give them a Nescafe wave, just try and show a bit of humanity…
Happy Christmas Fellow Truckies…
They should all be shot on site!!!
MR VAIN:

Quite agreed, bloody Scanias
Thats a long trailer behind you though
500hp is only just enough to pull it!!! I’ve had many a caravanner come and say how they wish they had a tow car like mine!!

How do you tow a caravan behind a unit anyway?
Think I either saw you or your lookalikey on the M1 last week or so?
During the summer on the A1 round the berwick area, they fill me with anguish - there are just so bloody many of them.
Ban mobile caravans , static caravans are the way forward! Jeremy clarkson for PM

ya big show off

This can depend on what you are towing with and what you are towing.
EG my last 'van, a lunar delta twin axle towed behind my Discovery and was the same width
within a couple of inches.
Extension mirrors made no difference to my rear view, excepting that the extensions were distracting.
My current 'van is quite a bit wider so I defo need extensions.
As far as I know , the law now requires extension mirrors on all caravan towing vehicles, regardless of widths.
Incidentally, i enquired about fiting a reversing camera to the rear of my van to get around the problemsthat I find with rear vision.
I was told that I could fit one without any problem but would be committing an offence if I had the screen operating whilst driving forward.
This from VOSA.
The only vehicle I have driven with a camera automatically switched it off when forward gear engaged, is this the same for all HGV’s with camers?
If ya got it, flaunt it!!!

One of the trucks I drive has a camera mounted above the N/S door looking down and slightly back to check for cars from when it spent a lot of time over the water. This can be operated whilst in forward gears, just wondered if it’s legal then?
Don’t Police cars have video and a screen as well?
Doyoumeanme,
can’t answer your questions as I dont know the answers. Guess the police have an exemption.
I can only quote what I was told.
Seems crazy that when someone wants to deal with a problem and make driving safer that they are banned from doing so.

To an extent, but even they get caught out sometimes!
Friend of mine has his own garage business; since he did a few years as a police mechanic, and has a good reputation, he gets a lot of their MOT businesss.
Couple of years ago he was in the delightful position of having to tell the head of the Traffic dept. that three of their jam sandwiches had failed their MOT’s because of the positioning of the camera monitor on the dashboard. He did admit to me later that he thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
