All truck drivers hate caravanners - hit or myth?

for me i have 3 pet hates with caravaners.
1)they park in truck bays at msa"s without getting fined as a truck would if it parked in anything other than a truck bay.why do they park there?,do they think they are billy big wheels?.they can easily fit into the normal spaces, albiet taking up 2 spaces rather than 1.clampers take note.
2)now im starting to get angry,in the height of the summer when most of the inexperienced caravanners are out(you know the type, the ones without a stabalizer bar going swinging up the outside lane at 70 mph like the tail of a wagging dog,and no extension mirrors fitted, badly loaded, so they cant see what they have whipped behind them),are the caravanning “mates”,where numerous friends/relatives/"really good friends " decide to trundle down the motorway in convoy(usually about 5-6 of them) about 6 foot between each vehicle, and about half a mile long doing exactly 1 mile an hour less than normal speed limited trucks.will they back off, slow down even, to let the outside lane queue of 20 miles past?,no way, they want to keep up with mavis and fred in front and nobody will come between them, whilst the lead car slows and speeds up with everyone else following suit, making overtaking them a long drawn out frustrating experience.caravaners, please look in your (non fitted extension mirrors) and observe other traffic around you.
3)the caravaners inept ability to slow down to 30mph on the entire length of single carriageways whilst fred and mavis observe farms and sheep and the kevinettes in the back stick fingers up and do horn pull motions to you without a care in the world or even a clue that there is a 40+ mile queue behind them.
i feel much better now, another rant off my chest…nurse

Just tow the [zb] thing faster than I am going and I will be happy.

I’ll agree with that

this is what is being said about you guys on this web site caravantalk.org.uk/topic/320 … -the-road/
rather than hate each other can we not get a love for each other and educate both sides

Well- as a non-hgv driver I think that there should be a minimum distance between hgv’s when they have cruise control working, and also no hgv’s should be in the outer two lanes of motorways, or in the outer lane of two lane motorways. The latter works between Calais and the Belgian border!

maybe that is the reason he is a non hgv driver, no brain cells you see

So we leave a bigger gap and what fills it, oh yeah a car, who then slows down and makes the truck pull out to pass him. :stuck_out_tongue:

I had to laugh though about the woman who hit a bus, and didn’t know she had done it

hi, just read the link to the caravan site, and if that wagon on the m5 was ONLY 2 foot in front when he cut in, HOW come he couldnt get the number■■?
i can see better than that, and i had to have specs at the last medical, :sunglasses:
the last caravaner that pulled out on me then stopped at the newsagents (followed by me) told me that he drove bigger trucks than that in the army, and in his opinion i could stop easy, and that he wasnt from newark either,
 make them have a trailer test, if they like to be compared to us they should be treated like us :unamused:

i dont hate anythink on the road because i dont own it, but what i do hate is drivers who dont no motorway rules and sit in the middle lane at 50mph it really gets on my fits, if i was a traffic cop there the peeps i would crucify, there the first peeps to complain about lorrys overtaking eash other because they havent got the whole motorway to themselves plus there a danger to themselves and others so get the hint middle lane hoggers move out the bloody way!!!

i do but i hate everyone and everything

I dont hate carvanners I just hate caravans.

Apart from blocking Strensham services every summer, my other pet hate regarding caravanners is their penchant for driving down narrow Welsh lanes and expecting me to reverse because they can’t. Not WON’T reverse; CAN’T reverse . :imp:

+1 on what someone else said about the prats with no extra mirrors.

Camper van drivers are even worse, terrified of scratching their pet snails on a twig so they won’t pull over far enough to the hedge to drive past, regardless of the fact that a dirty great John Deere tractor with a sileage trailer has just flown through said gap with room to spare.

And another thing ; why do they always park in the MIDDLE of every lay-by? :unamused:

Its the drivers of small cars towing big caravans that cause all the problems !
LOOK:

nothing wrong with them just some of idiot who drive them. plus i deliver or 6 every day

F.F.S. HOW can a caravaner who possibly does 400 miles a year towing educate a trucker who does nearly that daily!? THAT is what I hate about caravaners - they’re so ignorant it surprises me they realise there’s a hole in their arse :imp: - If you want to go camping buy a bloody tent and stop being such a girl :smiling_imp:

(think this might be my first deleted post :unamused: but it’s something I feel very strongly about)

good point a percentage of caravanners do not come from a proffesional driving back ground and do not understand about speed limiters
holding you out in the second lane when you have let them join the motorway slow overtaking manouvers over filled motorway services etc
and i agree there should be a driving test motorway included for caravans
and some caravanners do travel more than 400 miles a year some across europe i have done 2 trips this year one to southern greece why because i love the freedom of the road
and want to stop in the places i used to rush through when i i did the same job as you 15 years ago
and you really have let youre self down with such a aggressive post do you suffer with road rage

no, I don’t really think I’ve let myself down - as I said It’s something I feel very strongly about.

Let’s put another twist to what I’ve said - I’ve not been a profesional driver for all that long and yes I accept there’s bound to be very experienced drivers out there towing caravans who would easily run circles around me - but I was aiming at the majority. I’ve been camping since before I could walk (literaly) though and, though I’ve tried it, there’s no way I’d tow a rickety tin can behind me to sleep in. Each to their own though - but having seen so many arrogant caravaners and camper van owners who think they own the road then the site I’ve a long standing disliking for the majority - just an example but why on earth do most sites put caravans and motorhomes close to the toilets and showers (though the majority have their own) and shove the tents (who don’t have their own) right up the far end of the site?

I remember arriving at a site late one evening (the day hadn’t gone well and we needed somewhere to stay for the night) Straight away a guy jumped out of his motorhome quizing me and showing he was less than amused at our lateness - thinking he was the owner (because of what he’d said and the way he was acting) I asked politely if he would mind letting us stop for the night, I apologised for the lateness and explained our predicament and that we’d pitch right out of the way so as not to disturb anyone.

What did he say?

“oh, well, you’ll have to see the warden - I’m just staying here but but but”

I’m affraid your co-tin box merchants have given me a generally low opinion which isn’t helped by what I see regularly on the roads, apologies to the good folk but there’s exceptions to every rule

thanks dark seeker
its nice to hear your side of the story yes some of these sites and campers can be a bit up their selfs
have you taken a look at the link on the caravan forum a lot of good replys for you guys

Theres only one thing that springs to mind " ■■■■■■" or Top Gear have the right idea…

It says ERF not RAF:

funny oi oi

I was driving down the M5 near Bristol in the summer in my car when this [ZB] in a Pajero steamed passed me at about 80mph towing a twin axle supa-■■■■ van and was steaming passed all the traffic, undertaking etc.

He overtook two tippers in front of me and as he passed them I noticed the thing start rocking from side to side as he was in the outside lane. i lost sight of him as one of the trucks began to overtake the other then not long after a blizzard of brake lights came on. I said to the Mrs “He’s crashed that” and sure enough he’d jacknifed it and smahed it against the roadside fence wiping out the back of the van. No injuries or anyone else involved - just him and his Mrs who looked really pleased

If anyone had been involved/injured then it would have been different but me and the wife had a good laugh afterwards: KARMA!!!

Yes, my caravan has it’s own shower, but a 10 litre hot water tank, barely enough for 1 let along 2 adults, 2 kids. I’m paying £26 a night
to stay on site with those facilities, so ■■■■ right I’m gonnae use them. As for the pitch I’m put on, thats down to the site warden. I’ve noticed
tent area’s tend to be in the areas with the better drainage. No fun camping if your tent is flooded is it.

As for towing, I’ve never had a major problem. I’m on holiday so no need for rushing about, saying that if I can do 60 on
the motorway safely then I will. Reversing is not a problem. Most of the caravanners who can’t reverse have a mover fitted
to it anyway so don’t need to reverse on site or when storing thier van, hence why their [zb]ed when having to do it!

I take charge of loading, heavy stuff at the bottom over the axle, the rest spread out evenly through out the van.
Nothing heavy high up. I’ve had the same van for 10 yrs I know how it tows and when it ‘feels’ wrong.
It gets serviced each year and I would say I’m in the majority of responsible caravnners.
As per usual it’s the small minority who get the bad name and by assocaition so do I. Truckers probably
see more of this minority simply because they are on the road .
