Grey speed cameras will be turned yellow in a bid to make them more visible and reduce incidents of sudden braking, the government has announced. The decision means all working cameras on England’s motorways and major trunk roads will be yellow by October next year. Highways England confirmed the plan after ministers ordered a review into speed camera policy this year. There are about 200 camera sites on England’s motorways. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: "I’ve always been clear that cameras should be visible and get used for safety rather than revenue raising. “This move is about applying common sense to our roads. Speed cameras should make journeys safer rather than lead to dangerous braking.” Grey cameras were first introduced on the M42 near Birmingham in 2006, following the introduction of variable speed limits. Highways England chief executive Jim O’Sullivan said: “We use cameras for safety and traffic management only when other more popular solutions, like engineering, are not adequate to tackle particular problems on our network.” The Department for Transport (DfT) said the majority of colour changes will take place during the standard renewal of camera units to minimise costs. Councils and police forces are required to publish information on the safety impact of speed cameras on local roads. DfT guidance states these cameras should be yellow.

So those who either deliberately speed or worse still do not have the ability to concentrate on their speed will now see them earlier and stamp on the brakes earlier
they were all meant to be yellow years ago, then they just put them up grey anyway.other than that, the actual campera was painted yellow when it was at the end of a camouflaged pole where you would never see it…at least if they paint every single type of speed camera yellow, then theres always a better chance of nailing the brakes though its really irrelevant when they put them up behind a gantry on the m/way

[zb] me, this is like deja vu, didn’t this happen about 15yrs ago, or is my mind playing tricks on me.
David Blunkett ordered it when he was home secretary.
Northumberland police area were all grey at the time, and when I wrote to the chief constable to point out what his boss had decreed, they were all done in the area not long after.
It won’t reduce incidents of sudden braking. If it would then you wouldn’t see sudden braking at the ones already painted yellow but you do because most drivers don’t look at their speedo so don’t know they were already under the limit. Others simply don’t know the limit and will brake hard on dual carriageways because they were doing just over 60 and think that is the limit.
Seeing as cameras are supposed to be a deterrent and not a revenue generator they should be clearly visible and marked. Some countries that put road safety first even have countdown markers to the cameras.

I cant see it making much difference with the new HADECS 3 cameras, they are normally well hidden, either by trees or behind the gantry posts.
Safety my arse…
An example of how they are hidden
Imagine that from the opposite angle… invisible if you are looking straight forward.
I have seen them go off loads of times in the dead of the night, cars doing 80mph+ getting flashed, illegal yes, dangerous NO!
Yes maybe hard to see, but that ■■■■■■■■■ and white camera sign is pretty conspicuous!

the camera sign is conspicuous…on the gantry…to draw your attention to the gantry,so you arnt aware of the live cameras out of your line of vision, its not as if it not done deliberately,

yes. there’s a camera sign to inform drivers that there are cameras. doesn’t matter a jot if the camera is mounted in the gantry or to the side of it.

They’re not hidden at all. They’re dead easy to see. Look at the big red box round about it. A dead giveaway…
This side of the border they are all bright yellow and highly visible, they are also well sign posted warning that you are about to pass a camera, some signs even flash on and off, and then there is the obvious tell tale markings on the road, and yet they still get caught by the dozen … I would do them for due care and attention.

I dont get the apoplectic rage and anger that comes from all the moaning about them being only for revenue raising. If that fact ■■■■■■ anyone off then the simple solution is don’t speed and you wont have to pay. Instead of moaning that “Oh that one camera raised £300,000 in one month. Its nothing but a revenue raiser” and demanding they are easy to see (or ,more accurately, slow down for) perhaps a bit more thought should be placed in the fact that 5000 people (161 per day) are speeding and think it ok.
If you get caught, ■■■■ it up and stop moaning

Indeed, the minimum requirement for speeding should be 100% concentration, miss a speed camera and you are not concentrating.
My big gripe with speeding tickets are the “Camera Vans” who seem to love roads that are not natural 30 zones … I can think of one near me coming into town, it was NSL for as long as I can remember, then without any reason they just lowered it to 30, no idea why it is not a built up area … the camera van just loves lurking along there, very sneaky and in my opinion doing nothing towards road safety.
