there are whether you like it or not just as many positives for some on agency as a full time job, as several have said on here the decent lads are kept busy, they can pick and choose shifts etc.
on a full time job if you have a hell of a week this week you cant say am knackered am only doing 4 next, you can on agency.
you can get into companies where there are no full time jobs. etc.etc.etc.
There’s agency guys at our place who’ve been there full time for 20 years (apart from holidays and rest days naturally).
What’s the point, why not just be perm?
If you want a day or a week or even a month off you just say you’re not available. You just say as I did last week because I want tonight off “can’t do Wednesday next week” and that’s that. No need to justify yourself to anybody, no having someone saying you can’t take it, no black marks on your employment record with the company. If you fancy a change of job for a week or two you just ask the agency to send you somewhere else for that time.
If you go permanent you have to go to work even when you don’t want to or really could do with a day off to deal with something or just can’t be arsed and if you fancy a change of scene the only way you’re going to do that is by handing in your notice.

And then there’s the fact that often you’re also on more money.
I can’t see how any of this benefits the customer, the one paying for it all, surely a full timer costs less over 9 or 20yrs no matter how many sickies they pull. There’s things that go on in the background of these outfits that we don’t know about, illogical me thinks, we used to have a perm agency driver pre recession, been there over 4yrs and always got a job & keys even when it was slack while us full timers were sent home on full pay, we didn’t understand the logic but the boss said they were paying for him so they should get their money’s worth lol. They eventually got rid of him and subsequently some of us followed, difference was we got redundancy money, agency bod didn’t , I suppose he did with the 20p/hr more he was on over the years…
Thanks for all the replies, comments and help so far and please keep them coming I know I’m asking a lot but im really just looking for Monday to Friday day work as after being on the road and away for most of the past 6 years, myself and my other half are looking to buy our first home together so that is why ideally I am looking for permanent as it will be easier for the mortgage purpose ( not that I have discounted the idea of agency work ), as for the type of work I’m looking for im a bit of a blank canvas really as my last two jobs have been driving trucks in the Hospitality/ Event world which I have now had enough and want to settle down and get the work/ life balance right- I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but all I’m looking for is a chance and with some good training im confident I can be an asset to anyone.
Flexibility in this industry is important, hence why a lot of assets are leased/hired/rented. Full time workers are entitled to redundancy payments etc which can prove to be an expensive method of finding the right skills in an industry which has quite an aggressive upside and downside…

i get where you are coming from pd but what if over that 20 years they have had 10 day per year where they have no work for said vehicle, no wages need paying as they just say stand fred down today.
with someone else doing the recruitment they dont need a large HR dept advertising cost or the worry of if fred is off ill for the next few months with illness a, b or c they just say over the phone replace fred please.
something seems rather strange that you were stood while agency bod worked mind! (backhanders spring to mind!).

Fair point:lol:, I have no idea what what occurs in fawlty towers.
It seems strange but I looked at the positive in my favour, he’s on more money in theory but he has to work for it:grin: it got so good we used to ring in whilst still in bed then told not to come in:grin:
Deliver for Wickes, but that probably involves every other Saturday morning and the money is poor.
Or Stobart Automotive possibly at Kirk Sandall.
NFT is on an eight week rota, so four weekends in a row off. It’s a fair old commute from Retford though. Griffin is probably the closest to you, but I saw one of their ad’s a couple of years ago and the money was a joke.
