Aldi high driver turnover?

I’ve noticed that at some locations aldi seem to recruit regular(ish) for drivers. I say ish because it’s no where near as regular as some general haulage companies who are pretty much always after drivers, but considering the pay package it seems surprising how often they do put the adverts out. Are they just constantly expanding or do they not hold onto drivers despite the pay? And if it’s the latter is this just because it’s not seen as a proper driving job as such with some drivers due to all the self tipping and short distances that you drive?

May not be everyone’s cup of tea

I haven’t worked for them, the only full time supermarket job i had was Kwik Save, which was a cracking number.

Going to hazard guesses here, apart from the self tipping scenario i wonder if there’s several reasons for some not being able to take to it and stick it.

  1. Presumably hourly paid but maybe some drivers can’t help themselves flying about like their arse is on fire, then find they’ve painted themselves into a corner instead of setting out their ‘‘steady but reliable and damage free’’ stall when they first started.

1a. Weird shifts, plus maybe the money isn’t as good as might first appear if the premiums for night rate, weekend rate, bank hol rate and overtime rate arn’t there.

  1. Tight access with shopper’s cars parked in the way regularly, leading to having to wait for customers to move cars before they can get in or out…refer to reason 1 above re hourly pay.
Also some drivers really struggle with town/city deliveries.

  2. Standard fleet lorries, though in a different league altogether than Kwik Save’s day cab 3 series Scanny’s and rough as a badgers arse Renault G cab they possibly don’t carry much kudos among the premium machines now becoming common, and lorry choice does have an influence on some driver’s attraction to the job…when on Kwikies i heard many times comments from drivers about how they wouldn’t be seen dead in such rubbish, which oddly enough suited us regulars there because the last thing we wanted was any more glory boys ripping the arse out of the job than we already had :unamused:
For what its worth had Kwikies stayed Kwikies, i’d still be there now.

Always advertising at Cardiff, word is they treat drivers like dogs.

The self tip and fill seems to be an big issue at the stores where the place is left in a mess and the driver is expected to sort it out adding several hours to the day.

On the other hand I hear there are many who like the work, as we are all aware there is a high percentage of people in this game who are totally bone idle with a most un-fortunate attitude who whinge and bleat constantly, Aldi is not for them.

The hourly rate is good with a 5 on three off shift pattern and enhancements for nights after 18:00 hrs, and more for weekends.

A former colleague of mine starts with them next week and has promised to keep in contact regarding the job.

When a company advertises constantly its never a good sign there may be an explanation for this as they stores seem busy and the are expanding, the jury is out for me at the moment.

I can see reasons that make it unattractive

  • self tip
  • access in car parks
  • working more weekends than not
  • less than 50% driving
  • I’m guessing your going to have almost zero chance of getting any time off over Xmas

However, I’m still surprised that with the hourly pay seeming so good that they advertise so much, so maybe they are just expanding so fast. Either that or the pay just doesn’t outweigh the negatives for most.

From what I hear that seems to the biggest issue as they don’t have warehouse staff at stores so its a bit unorganised and very awkward and messy, combined with drivers not collecting what they should have thus knackering the job up further.

If everyone pulled their weight if would be one of easiest jobs going but unfortunately nowadays most just do what’s easiest for themselves and don’t think of other too much, which is the same in lots of jobs/industries not just ours!

If Aldi want to pay drivers £16 an hour on nights to sort out some pallets and boxes in a warehouse where do I sign ?

Does anyone work at the Atherstone branch, I got some questions ?

Advertising is mainly due to their continuous expansion program for more store openings, but also a few drivers who cant hack doing abit of graft and prefer being steering wheel attendants only. Its not everybodies "cup of tea"but it suits others who dont mind doing abit of work instead of sitting on their ■■■■ all day drinking coffee in some RDC Drivers room
According to my daughter who works in Head Office at Atherstone, she says theres rarely month goes by without a store opening.

There is no premium for weekend working, you get paid premiums for working after 1800 and on bank holidays only. This is at Cardiff, no idea if it applies to other depots around the U.K.

Hi all.

Have in fact just come of a evening shift at Aldi Chelmsford, My first venture behind the wheel for some considerable time. Been looking for some extra cash recently do joined a agency throwing in some shifts here and there.

As mentioned it is very involved and not your average driving gig. I myself used to tramping with little or no interaction with the load. Whereas last night I loaded both the deliveries. Lots of pallet wrapping required at depot plus distributing load correctly and such like. Then opening the store your tipping at, Some are very tight for space so it not a case of just tip and go you have to find space for it. Then take back empties and repeat.

I asked for nights because it would be a big ball ache getting into some stores during the day me thinks. All up not too bad but I don’t do it full time. You do earn your money though, Could earn slightly less with far less grief but it’s horses for courses I guess.

hi all
after nearly 30 years tramping i got fed up with being treated like a robot and the bosses not giving a damm about drivers having any life outside of the job.so now im working nights for a big supermarket although not directly for them (no its not stobbarts) i do have to get in the back and push cages onto the unloading bays/scissor lifts and very rarely tail lift and then reload with cages of cardboard/plastic rubbish.my contracted hours are 4pm until 12.45 am and i very rarely do those hours as second loads are not often ready when i get back off my first run so im doing 12/13 hours a night most nights so my wages are similar if not better than when i was tramping
to be honest i had got to a stage when i had,had enough of tramping but before that happened i dont think i would have suited what im doing now,its a bit more physical what im doing now but on the whole this job is a doddle and doing nights suits me
so im not suprised that some supermarkets can not find drivers, the job is a bit more hard work and some shifts dont suit, its not a monday to friday type of job (i do tues to sat) but one thing about the firm i work for is that they have a policy of do the job right no mater how long it takes, dont rush just do it proper

I believe it’s also a self load at Aldi too as well as a self tip.

I started with Aldi Cardiff last September, just before the Cardiff depot went live, so we ran the trucks from a yard in Cardiff, but had to go via Swindon to get the trailers loaded/unloaded.
My reasons for leaving after a week, were several.

Management treat you like a nuisance, and because of the rigid management structure there is a very top down “blame” culture. You are always watched, and always perceived to be wrong.

Access to the shops is dreadful. Unnecessary blindside reverses, access through car parking, staff unable or willing to help. Any oroblems/incidents/delays are automatically your fault (see blame culture above).

Access/room in the shops is dreadful. Loading dock often full of pallets/returns/rubbish, warehouse space full and/or unorganised. You end up trying to move everything around, and end up doing half the shop staffs work.
The loading dock is supposed to be clear, but if you ask for help/complain, the shop staff will at best moan, or at worse put in a complaint about you being rude to then. …

The hours are kept at 40 a week. Overtime is available, but those extra hours are added to your monthly hours, and you’ll be given some short local days at the end of the month, to keep your hours down…so you work an extra day (s), for the same money…

In terms of liking or disliking this job I can see both sides. Not everyone’s cup of tea. Which is good. If everyone wanted the same job then it would be no good. It seems the answer to my question as to why they seem to recruit a lot when in the face of it the overall package seems pretty good would be that it is due to expansion.

Personally I would like to do it, just can’t afford to stop tramping yet for it but as soon as I can I’m going to give it a shot.

The way I see the negatives are:

1/ self load and tip - doesn’t bother me at all
2/ working a lot of weekends - not bothered, I actually like some weekends off as long as I still get the odd full weekend
3/ access problems - well reglardless of how tight or if it’s blindside etc they all must be planned out and doable

I’ve applied. It is self load/tip but all with electric pump truck
