Hi everyone, new poster but long time visitor on here and I’m after some info about the Aldi DC in Cardiff.
I applied on their website for a day shift job and after passing the online questions and the application form I have been invited for an interview and assessment.
After reading lots of posts about this company on here it seems to be a Marmite job which you’ll either like or hate,I know all about the self tip/load stuff and don’t mind a bit of graft but I’d like to hear the thoughts of current Aldi drivers on what they think about the job and how your treated, length of day, wages etc.
Thanks in advance.
Pmd you
High hourly rate, short hours.
If you live local, and want shortish days, you might like it. If you like 10hr+ days, to earn the money, you’ll be dissapointed. Don’t fall for the ‘extra days for overtime’ scam. They add those hours to your total for the month.
High hourly rate and short days equals happy days .

It certainly does. If you live local, or don’t mind the commute in and out of Cardiff every day…

You get paid monthly, and if you do an extra day, those hours are added to your monthly total. So if you work an extra day, say 9 or 10 hours, if they keep a few regular days down by running locals, you’ll end up with your average monthly hours, but having worked an extra day. If you do get an extra day in, you’re working six days.
You work most Saturdays and Sundays aswell.
Unloading at the stores can be a ball ache. Access is often troublesome (blindsided, through the car park), and the loading dock/warehouse is often a mess. The shop staff don’t want to know. You’ll regularly be asked to put pallets straight in the shop (you’re not allowed to do that).
It looks good on paper, but it really is a marmite job.

I have a mate who works there and he mentioned it’s not long hours and he earns about £2,000 per month, he doesn’t use poa do he legally cannot do long hours or work a days overtime. They do 5 on 3 off and your driving style is monitored and if you score 90% or lower the boss ain’t happy.

So regardless of how many days you work they try and keep you at the 174 hours per month? And to do that if you do an extra day then you will end up with a load of shorter shifts to bring your hours back down to the 174? So for your “overtime” all your getting is home early on a few days rather than an extra cash

Yes.
As long as you know that’s the score then and don’t expect the money then I guess you can live with it. You might get a few 8 hour shifts in lieu of your extra day. Wow I’ve forgotten what it’s like to only work 8 hours. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. Think I could get used to that though!
Do they plan one 45 minute break into your shift and is that paid or unpaid? And does it fall within your 10 hours or is it 10 hours working plus the break so your total shift length is actually 11 hours?
I’m in the same boat as you mate but looking at getting in at the Neston depot which is local to me. I’m in general haulage at the moment and im getting fed up of the long days. My kids are only young and i don’t wanna be missing out on them growing up so a supermarket job would suit me down to the ground. Good pay and 5 on 3 off makes it very attractive. Yes you have to work most weekends but days off in the week means I can take the kids to school, do what I wanna do and pick them up and take them to activities like swimming etc which im currently missing out on. Plus in the school holidays we can go out in the week when its less busy.
Paid breaks and the 10 hrs shift length is including a 45 min break.

The question is, is that £2000 before, or after tax?
174 hours ×£12.50 = £2175.
£2175-22% =£1696.50 per month.
I take that home, and I work 4on-4off.
£2000 take home is about 2440 before tax,
£2440 ÷ 12.5 = 195 hours
On days it’s £11.90 for the first year which for your 174 hours is about £1600 after deductions depending on your own tax code etc
Then after 1 years it’s £13.50 an hour which is about £1800 after deductions. That’s days.
The only rate that gives you 2k take home is nights after 1 year which is 15.93ph.
Either way it’s still not bad if your after shorter shifts than general haulage and to know what time you can go home etc. For me it would be worth a pay cut just for that if it meant having more family time.

Day rate in Cardiff has gone up? Last year was £12.50 on days.
You are right. If you are after short days and being home every day, it’s not bad.
