Can anyone tell me why my boss spends £60k+ on a vech and it doesnt come with one single airbag?
yet spend 6k on a ford Ka and you get min two!!!
Is there a good reason for it , i know you can spec them but is a LGV/HGV drivers life not as important as a car buyer?
SORRY if been asked before just something thats annoyed me for a wee while lol
you mentioned air bags , ME I would have a steering wheel system that drops away when the truck is involved in a crash as this would save lives and cause less injury to a driver,
Re: Pete’s answer
Audi had that system many years ago it was called “pro call ten” the stearing wheel/dash collapsed with cables pulling them in away from the driver:passanger.
BUT the Insurance companys had them pull it as it was very expensive to fix in minor bumps !

YOU are correct about AUDI ; but we are now years in front and a system can ne found and built so that it works, another big bug bear is the bloody seat belt, either re design it so that truck drivers do not get NECK rash or fit a racing style system i had one fitted in the mine proof Bedford RL and it was brilliant so why oh why can manufactures not do some thing about this in this day and age , of health and safety ,.,

He’s probably seen the results of the truck airbag in action . I.e they don’t save you from anything in a truck.
You ever see one of these things go off? I’m happy when I’m driving a vehicle without one. Your big problem when you hit something more or less head on is what happens to your legs when distortion to the front of the vehicle pushes the pedals into the seat front just when you’re stamping on them with all your might to avoid the collision. Like how they always say on the news “such and such a person was taken to hospital with leg injuries” and you think “that’s not so bad”, but it means their legs have been crushed lengthways (cheery subject, eh?). Like Rocky 7 says, don’t crash.
funny, ive never until now thought about this
drivers legs are the most common cause of injury,im suprised they dont fit airbags at leg level.im now not at all happy realising i aint got any in a 3 year old truck…how peculiar.
I think new cars are designed so the engine pushes back under the passenger compartment instead of hitting the bulkhead to avoid this, but I wouldn’t like to put it to the test. As lorries tend to be forward control, you are far more vulnerable than you think you are. Having said that a collegue of mine walked away from a wreck that made me feel sick when I saw it, but he didn’t know he was about to crash so I suppose he wasn’t all rigid and pushing the pedals.

I think you’ll find an airbag is just to prevent damage to your head and neck through being jolted forward into a void. Its not a prevention against being crushed. As has been said here above, if you hit anything kiss your legs and lower half goodbye, neck and head problems will be the least of your worries
Although Fallmonk may feel happier with a couple of spacehoppers in his cab the reality is they wont work !!!
a trucks dont stop as fast as a car in a crash so the person will not be flung forwrd as harsh.
if the lorry where to stop that quick the force behind the cab from the trailer will have crushed the drivers area anyway thus rendering the airbag useless due to the person probably having a massivly crushed body
the air bags need a few milliseconds to react in a car you are normally around 1 meter away from the sensors and the sensors are about 30cm from the front bumper on a truck you are 30 cm from the front bumper so by the time the air bags react you are already hit in the face , if the sensors where to be placed further forward there is more chance of false deployment .
cost small bumps that could be ignored or repaired at small cost could in some cases wright the truck off.
more to go wrong , beleive it or not air bags are serviceable items that are supposed to be checked. they are not a life of the car item
