does anybody no what would happen if your travelling down the motorway 56mph and something happened to one off the trailers nearside air pots,ie it failed, or even blow up,(could it blow up) or it fell to pieces,what effect would this have on the vehicle and what would the vehicle do,many thanks

Just like any other part of the air system the air will escape through the hole/split and the brakes will eventually come on. I had the brake chamber knocked of by debris and the air lose was so quick i was doing '11’s into the hard shoulder.

We used to carry spare diaphragms, clevis pins, clevii, locking rings and new bolts, but they became so numerous, different sizes, travel and shapes. Type 24. Type 30. Type 20. etc

It would prevent that brake working, it cant turn the S Cams by pushing on the slack adjusters

yes that is exactly what it is franglais,no as i recall i could only see them on the back 2 axles,1 on each corner behind the wheel,thanks,

If a brake chamber fails mechanically it can either fail to activate, or more likely, as already said, it can activate prematurely.
An air leak will likely cause it to come on, and will lock the wheel. Not easy to mistake this.
One wheel out of six locking on a trailer? We can all say wed notice that straight away, but Im very sure, not everyone would. Enough black lines showing in yards and roads all over to prove not everyone sees it. It won`t drag the trailer sideways in the same way that a steer axle wheel locking up undoubtedly would.
And if you look again you should see all the wheels will have brakes and associated chambers. Very peculiar if not.

Yes if it fails it can, and likely will, cause the vehicle to veer if it’s a rigid, as you say, like a Midlum.
One on a trailer will just usually leave a ■■■■■■■■■ skidmark and a bald tyre.

And I do agree with OwnAccountDriver: it may go little noticed on a trailer, but would be much more obvious on a rigid.
a lot of trailers with lifting axles only have spring brakes on the non lifting axles…the lift axle still has chambers but not the large spring brake type.

And sometimes the third axle has 3 air chambers on it, one of them operates the lift axle, or it may have a separate air bag to lift the axle using a fulcrum
