Air dryer canister

There’s a bit of water getting into my air tanks and so it has been suggested to me I change the canister on the air dryer. What is involved in this? Is it as simple as unscrewing the old one and screwing a new one on? Just trying to work out if it’s something I can easily do myself to save a trip to the workshop. Is there likely to be anywhere I can get one cheaper than Renault without getting something second rate that won’t last?

TIA,
Paul

It’s easy as long as whoever fitted it didn’t overtighten it, unscrew old one change o ring and fit the new one. Build your air up til it blows off to release the pressure before you unscrew the old one. Lube the seals to make it easier for next time.

you can get them from any commercial parts factors/suppliers

all you need is a filter strap, and as has already been said, you may need to release the pressure before it will come off, an easy way i have found to do this is to puncture the side of the old cartridge with a small screwdriver

a supplier such as this one in Malton

Thanks for the replies, I’ll get one myself and change it then. I’ve already got a filter strap which I use for oil filters on the cars so getting it off shouldn’t be an issue.

you might need to get a bigger, more heavy duty one, they can be a right PITA to get off, also, the cartridge is quite a large diameter, best take the strap with you to make sure it will fit, then if it doesn’t, you can get a new strap whilst you are there, save making an extra journey

should also change them every 6 months on the reno repton!! and not 12 mths as some say to esp on the reno, also pending which air dryer is fitted as one of them has a left hand thread  and they aint that cheap from factors either but still cheaper than reno,

also if the cartridge gets goosed all the little particles can get inside the air system causing valves to break etc so changing them at an early stage is a must

Had it changed today, decided I wanted it doing ASAP so I just got the CV garage next to one of my regular tips to do it. Only came to just over 20quid including the labour which I was happy enough to pay just for the piece of mind. Hopefully there won’t be any water in the tanks now.

It seems to have done the trick, 24h later not a drop of water in the tanks. Just shows you never stop learning as until this week I didn’t even know they had a canister that could be changed. It’ll get done every 6mo now.

Paul, now is the time to start learning more about your truck, work out what jobs you can do yourself and how to do them, where to get the parts from.

whatever job you can do yourself will save you paying extortionate labour rates for whoever does the job for you.

simple things like changing air/oil/fuel filters, air dryer cartridges, cabin filters, will all save you money.

a while ago, my local main dealer kept trying to persuade me to buy a new truck and take out a full R+M package, i kept telling them that i didn’t want a new truck and also that my labour rates were cheaper than theirs

Repton, when the truck is new one gets a selection of booklets from the factory which
will help you out, try asking these books if you do not have them, also may be able to
get them from E:BAY or even perhaps from a truck scrap yard , it will supply information
that is a help to you mate,
