Air 'Con'

my lorry not only has no air con but the fan doesn’t work so no hot or cold air, also the radio, the ■■■ lighter and the 12v socket don’t work so no phone charger and then the drivers window wont wind down because someone broke the handle and their is no seatbelts because its fourteen years old so if i hit something even at low speed its through the windscreen i go and also the clutch keeps going stiff every few times its pressed because of a faulty air pressure sensor so look at it this way it could be much worse if even the radio worked id be happy

get a new job :unamused:

I concur. If that’s what’s wrong with the bits you can see I shudder to think what’s going on under the surface (you know, the bits where the really big fines lie)

I totally understand where you’re coming from Jay and you’re in a catch 22 situation, but please take this advice with the goodwill it was intended with. GET OUT MATE! Seriously Jay this is most likely a cowboy company at the very best and dangerously negligent at worst. You’ve stated you are young, you have a long life ahead of you which could be full of regrets if you don’t change jobs asap. I honestly understand why you’re hanging on, but believe me mate, it aint worth it, and there are decent fully legal employers out there who won’t take the ■■■■ like you place are, and will give a young, keen newbie a chance.

Good luck fella.

its not to bad mechanicly but theres some serious rust around the cab, forgot to mention it takes 4 or 5 turns of the key to start sometimes and last week it left me stranded when the battery went completely dead out of the blue, ah the joys of it :unamused:

Sounds like you can qualify as a real driver.

Back in the day…no heater…no radio…no seat belt…no ■■■ lighter…no fan…no window winder

You had to strike matches and keep your pipe going to stop the windscreen freezing…or so I’ve been told!

Seriously…good luck with finding another job when you can!

cheers I appreciate the advice and I do plan on leaving but I don’t think they are negligent, its just my lorry that seems to have all the problems being so old and being worked hard all its life but theres nothing that I would call unsafe in it. I couldn’t just walk away now so soon because the boss seems fairly decent and took a chance on me when everywere else I looked I was shot down from the word go because I had no experience.

Un [zb]king believable…
I can’t put up with it in this heat, we have 1 motor in our fleet with a broken a/c, asked politely to swap it a few weeks ago & they did…

moan moan bloody moan, that is all drivers do!

They moaned about getting wet, now they complain about the heat :stuck_out_tongue:

If the drivers window won’t open the vehicle is not safe to drive. Suppose the indicators pack up whilst out on the road and you need to quickly give a hand signal?

The socket supplies might be just fuses.

No demister fan in winter is also dangerous. Ok the demister will work once traveling, but but your vision through the screen could be very obscured initially by condensation and/or ice.

…and the boss gives a ■■■■ does he/she…?

‘…my lorry [is a sack-o-cack] …’ etc

‘…get a new job…’

‘… I need to … get a bit more experience under my belt or at least until im 25 …’

You’re 24, mate - that’s nearly a quarter of a 'kin century - so get some experience of saying to the Big Cheese Bully at the workplace ‘hang-on, matey’ now by properly reporting illegal defects of an unroadworthy vehicle with which they are abusing your passive (otherwise very laudable) ‘can-do’ attitude.

They’re making extra profit out of your vulnerability for sure, but being young need not equate with being available for abuse in that bottom-of-the-pile heap that reads like it’s condemnable.

(Unless you wanna experience a few ■■■■■/crashes/accidents in it without much backlash before getting a shiny lorry  )

Jay you will learn more in 6 months with an old motor than you would learn in 18 months with a new one due to bits and pieces going wrong that wouldn’t happen with new ones. My first driving job was in the early sixties and the boss told me allways remember son “any silly bugger can drive a new motor it takes a good bloke to drive an old one”. So stick with it as at 25 you will be better placed insurance wise as well. Eddie.

Would you say the lack of a working seatbelt is unsafe? What about not being able to de-mist your windscreen and see where you’re going? Would you say that’s unsafe?

Seriously lad; refuse to drive that thing until it’s made roadworthy.

fredthered:
Since the hot weather began its almost impossible to sleep properly at night in my ‘tin coffin’ and when our new vehicles arrived they had been de-specified with amongst other things no aircon fitted.

When asked why, the big cheeses said it was a fuel saving measure and we didn’t really need it anyway in this country so we’ll just have to get on with it.

I asked if they were also going to turn off the aircon in the offices to which he replied that they had to legally provide a comfortable working environment for them so it stays on or they will go home due to the heat!!

So now I am at the bottom of the pecking and I’ll just have crack on!

Does anyone else have to put up with this kind of crap?

only for the last 30 years but you get used it in the end

No maximum legal working tempreture.

I’m a bus driver, this week ive come very very close to stopping the bus and refusing to drive. Air con only blows out hot FFS!!!

Two considerations:

1 You’ll also be unhealthily living on your wits all the time - which today’s lower pay rates do not pay you for like they did in the past

2 Choose between perpetuating the daily chore by massaging rubbish & die early like ‘…good blokes…’ do or live by respectfully requesting what is a legal entitlement, low-stress and safe for society workplace & risk to live longer :unamused:
