Air bags at tesco

i had the pleasure of delevering a load of bricks to a new tesco store under construction in bham, on thu morning.on arival at the entrance i was stopd by the usual somolian security guard /banksman,he took my details and told me where to park and wait ,so i pulled to where he said got out my cab climbed onto my trailor and started taking my straps/nets off the load, then out of nowhere i heard oi get down,i automaticly asumed somone was calling his dog so i just carried on unsecuring my load, then again oi get down but this time it was a lot closer and louder,on loking down to the ground i saw not a dog in sight but some scrawny looking man looking like he was rather agitated at me,so i said whats up hes replie was as follows, your not allowed up there its not safe get down ,i told him that id down it a hundreed times b4 and i would be fine, this did not seem to help the situation,he then started effin and blinding at me and saying about how many forms etc he wouild have to fill out if i fell of my trailor and to get off hes site, and he was going to ring up the company i was delivering for and get me banned from all tesco sites,to which i replied calmly 1 i dont shop in tosco so banning me from there sites would not bother me and 2 i was going to report him for swearing and being abusive towards me,the bloke then disapered.about 5 mins later a diferent bloke arrived saying the usual dont worry bt him mate hes always like that, but your not allowed back up on your trailor till weve made it safe i said it is mate, onlyy got motd few months ago,he had a bit more of sense of humour than the first jobsworth n chuckled,he then said that hed have to lay air bags all round my trailor b4 i could climb up there.so the polish brigade then arrived and some fifteen mins later my trailor was surrounded with these sausage like white bags filled with air i was then allowed to climb back up on my trailor, most sites i deliver to it takes me bt 5 mins to unsecure the load fifteen to hiab it of a total of tweenty mins, this place it took em 15 mins to lay air bags out 15 mins for me to unload and 15 for em to remove the air bags,i hope this is not a sign of things to come at building sites

Yes it is a sign of things to come on building sites, and if people continue to fall off trailers and die, like the poor sod at Nice Pack in Flint did, then its going to be for all of us, get used to it, money in the pocket for the hourly paid…

What :open_mouth: :open_mouth: , you mean the invisable protective force field emitted from a Hi-Viz vest won’t cushion your fall :stuck_out_tongue:

I deliver to mainly george wimpey and persimmon sites and they sent us a memo about a year ago saying under no circumstances do we attempt to get on our trailers unless there’s air bags around for safety!!!
To this day I haven’t seen a single bag!!
So I think they have to implement it for the “where there’s blame there’s a claim” culture we live in nowdays but most people don’t bother.

I had the same thing on friday morning at costains compound for the work on the bellfield tunnell on the M25 all I had was 200 6 metre lengths of slotted channel

took them 10 minutes for them to put the airbag thingys out so I could get up on the back to take the sheet off then I was waiting for 2 hours till the forklift was fixed as it had burst a hose when he tried to pick the channel up

Reminds me of a site I went to in Chelsea just off the kings road, first time I went there no problems, but the second time round I was removing my nets when one of the traffic marshals came over and asked me to get down as I’m not allowed on the bed of my truck. When I asked him how the hell I was supposed to get the nets off he replied that he would do it for me?!?!? So I got down and he got up and took the nets off and rolled them up like I wanted. Then I pointed at my crane and asked him if he was gonna operate it as I’m not allowed on my truck, he said it was ok for me to operate it as he had not been trained to use it :unamused: now my crane is a top-seat jobbie and is about 10ft off the ground, so in disbelief I asked why I’m allowed to climb 10ft up to my crane but I can’t stand on the bed of my truck which is about 2ft? My answer, shrug of the shoulders from him and the famous words “company policy” madness :open_mouth:

It is a breath of fresh air watching men work on a building site opposite my house, the land is owned by my landlord so that gives me “unwritten” permission to wander in and out at will :stuck_out_tongue: The lads there are 3 blokes who jointly own the construction company plus 2 casual labourers, there are no hiviz vests, they only wear hard hats when it rains or the mobile crane is called in and they all have mugga in the van with a cig and a pie from the local bakers.

The landlord walks on site with his £1000 suits and Loake shoes and everything stops while they discuss progress. The lorry driver climbs in the back of his tipper to unsecure packs of bricks, timber or bobcats and I have not seen anyone break sweat or even use an elastoplast :stuck_out_tongue:

and gordon brown last week released a statement, concluding that health and safety is strangling british economy, and is beyond stupid…never mr brown, whatever gave you that impression :unamused:

I wish there were airbags around my trailer when I fell out and broke my arm last year

Laughing aside, over a year later and my arm still gives me trouble. I didn’t intend falling, I didn’t think it would happen to me and I am of the ‘get on with the job’ type of person. Now I think a little differently. Accidents do happen and it only takes half a second for you to get distracted.

ive fallen off the back of mine a few times but more fool me for being a clumsy numpty.

Every time I read anything about Health and Safety it reminds me of Coffeeholics natural selection :stuck_out_tongue:

We will be told that there is a proper way to fall next.Perhaps inflatable hi-vis suits ? Maybe a gantry running the length of the truck that you attach your self into with a harness, when will it all end ?

Most supermarkets do “bags for life” - seems like Tesco are trying to go one better !!

i had that once in edinburgh, started getting shouted at by a somalian piratye type who could barely speak english.

anyway opened up the backroller door of the truck to get a pallet forked off, done that and i climbed onto the back bumper to grab the strap to bring the door down when he started having a go at me saying im not allowed up there to shut the door and that i need airbags.

i just laughed at him and grabbed the strap and jumped off the bumper and shut the door

being a salad dodger,i have an in-built inflatable cushion.just a pity when i fell off my truck i landed on my feet, and smashed my back up :frowning: .to me,when you look back to the 50"s and 60"s even the 70"s and 80"s,people were just getting on with their jobs without all this health and safety red tape, and claim culture.i think todays climate is laughable but at the same time sad.how far does it go though, might we next be stopped from actually driving trucks in case the risk assesment deems it too dangerous in case we may have a accident.life is full of everyday hazards,in everything we do whether it be at work or home and i fear this ball of cotton wool/nanny state garb will do more damage than good.

Does this mean i need to get air bags around my bed, for when i climb on the mrs :open_mouth:

we have only got all this health and saftey because of the claims culture, if the claims culture had never happend then we wouldnt have half the stupid health and saftey regs,

only if you get home unexpectantly early :open_mouth:

Here you go

Deliberately playing Devil’s Advocate

If you were to fall off your trailer under such circumstances would you claim for any injuries?
