was talking to agency lad and he was saying hes been at our depot for 3 years now[other than when they used d.s.s,for a while],said hes got the best of both worlds, regular work,5/6 days, lot better pay, said theres always rumours there trying to stop agency because of cost but itll never happen[even has some uniform].
so how often does this happen, anyone else got it,how long have you been there.
n.b not my experiance of agency, odd dys everywhere ta
I know agency guys on DHL contracts for several years. DHL logistics for Carphone Warehouse via Best Connection agency so it’s definitely possible.
I had a few long stints.
2.5 years at Hygena until I left due to getting fed up with the “permanent job” carrot being dangled…
12 months at RB until I took a job there
18 months at Arla Foods until I went self employed
There were many others where I’d be there several weeks. If you’re good then a company will try to keep you. Its not that hard to be that either - just don’t do any damage and if you do then own up straight away, don’t wallop through fuel, don’t upset people at collection/delivery, don’t look like a tramp, don’t be on the phone constantly asking stupid questions for things you’d be able to sort yourself with a bit of thought.
Ady,
I know of drivers who have been at ‘another branch’ of your work for 16 years!!! They go back through the last three owners/operators that have been there and have been ‘agency’ throughout. I asked them the other day about coping with the ‘quiet months’; they stated that in all that time, there was only one year where it went quiet.
You’re right about them trying to cut the [agency] hours though - it just doesn’t work and they always end up needing more!!
Ive been agy & now S/E for 9yrs
Come 12th Dec I will have been on 1 particular site 5yrs.
I know of around 20 drivers on the same site who also have around 5yrs + in
This site provides me with 80% + of my work ( 4/5/6 days p/week) with other sites I work at providing the remaining 20%. Some of those I have been working at on/off for 2-4 years.
The shortest continuous period at any site was 11 months at Wilkos.
Generally the only times I’ve not been working at are the traditional agy bleak periods (Jan - feb) then it’s time to book the holidays.
As previously stated, once you get to know a customers drops, proceedures, & paperwork ( crossing the "I’s & T’s etc) dress like you are 1 of the staff etc etc they will ask for you back. As both the company & agy know you can be relied upon to do the job right.
ive been with the same agency 14 years only do mon -thur now my choice this weeks work same as when i started same site same runs-they offer me other jobs if i want a change i do it otherwise stick to one job-regards-revman
Yeah I was 5 years in one place, only left cos my agency got greedy and tried to put new drivers into the job and cut back my work to accommodate them. I moved onto pastures new whilst they have continued to screw the job up and a wee bird tells me they’re likely to lose it to a new mob on the block. ■■■■.
My Agency has just gone bust Only 8 months old as well. Never mind, plenty more where they came from
I have been on the same agency over 5 years and have no intention of going for a full time job. I have always known i might be out of a job at any time but on the other hand as long as your agency can hold a few contracts then im sure they will try to hold onto experienced drivers!! It suits me not to take a full time contract even though i do full time hours. At least i can take a holiday when i want rather be told what dates i can have!!
I’ve been an agency driver for over 3 years since passing my Class 2 and then Class 1, and have never wanted to throw my lot in with a ‘permanent’ job (been offered quite a few). I’ve done agency work at places that have made me realise that I’m in a fortunate position by not working for them full time. At the moment I’m a regular agency driver with a ‘blue chip’ company in the Goole area, and I love it. I get paid more than their own drivers, work when I want (this week Mon - Thurs on days), never have to do nights out, can take a holiday/day off whenever I want , and the job is clean and easy. Also if I don’t like working somewhere I just ring the agency and tell them to ‘get me out off here’. They always find me a job somewhere else.
If I got a full time job with the company I’m currently working for, I would have to do weekends and from what I’ve been told by the permanent drivers I would have to book holidays 6 months in advance with no guarantees of getting a particular date.
The agency I work for have been excellent and have always delivered exactly what they say they would
Works for me anyway
