Can someone shed any light on why agency pay rates have basically stayed the same for the past 10 years■■?
Certainly.
They pay the same 'cos many drivers are daft enough work for it. If they didn’t, they’d have to pay more.
This, coupled with cheap labour from certain other countries means agencies get away with paying next to nothing.
One look at the many threads on this subject across this forum will tell you it’s unlikely to change any time soon
Insurance companies are happy to let the transport industry fiddle them left, right, and centre.
Would you cover a haulage yard as an underwriter if you knew that yard went out of its way to employ higher-risk insurance liabilities?
There is a glut of “any old drivers” but a shortage of fussy, highly skilled ones who might otherwise have pushed wages higher, if they were not swamped under by the “no speake english/dodgy licence/brudder background” brigade, who of course continue to get the job over those that won’t run bent, won’t work for less than a tenner per hour, and will blow the whistle on any yard gangster practices they are appalled to come across.
As it is, some firms would already be underwater if it were not for the fraudulent claims made against staff damage & shrinkage keeping the yard afloat.

Thats all very well in an ideal world but if you have to put food on the table and pay the rent/mortgage then been daft as you so put it, is the only option!
Seems to have been stuck at 8 or 9ph since 2006 ish.
On the bright side at least it’s a genuine hourly rate as opposed to trip money so enjoy driving at 40 causing stress to the guys on trip money.
im on more money than i was 6 years ago but no more overtime. its flat rates everywhere start to finish and with some there is no weekend rate either

Lovegod depends on what kind of agency we’re talking about
in what kind of industry

There are way too many factors to consider to get a sensible answer to the OP
‘demand’ should some that up
‘demand’ should some that up

I’ve been back and two on driving agencies down the years due to work circumstances just seems they make alot of money without the rates going up over the years, don’t like using agencies but sometimes have no choice

But if nobody did the work at low rates would the job not get done or would the rate go up.

So will you be leading by example then…… you’re going to refuse any work that comes your way, if the pay rate isn’t up to what you think you are worth…… so how will you live whilst you lead us all in your rebellion then? you won’t get any benefits from our not-so generous government anymore as you will be deemed to have deliberately made yourself unemployable by refusing work.
Interesting to see how long you last……
Let us know how it goes

I will not work for less than £10 per hour or for anyone who will not pay for breaks, the 3 agencies I work for no that so don’t offer anything paying less. I have worked from Christmas at 1 company on £13.34 per hour average 60 per week on sick cover. I have no work today or tomorrow but so what I would rather work 3 days for the same money as you would get for 6.
Possibly too many agencies as well. Theyre all after the work. Same as us, if they stick out for more money they won
t get the contacts.
Yes, time n a half is virtually extinct these days. But thats also the case for employed drivers. At least on the agency you usually get some extra for w/ends which a lot of employeds don`t.
We are where we are, and things aint going to change. Maximise your daily/hours, slow down!. Get self-employed and get Flat-Rate VAT registered to max your earnings from every job. It really adds up over the year.

You’re spot on about going self employed register with 4 or 5 agencies also get out and go around knocking on doors leaving them your details and rates that you charge so that they can cut out the middleman.
day rates £10.00ph
night rates £12.00ph
weekend rates £14.00ph
nightout rate £20.00ph
terms and conditions simple - payable in 7 days from invoice.

Can’t argue with that.
