I was on agency but was getting the odd job here and there due to my age and lack of experience. Needed a secure job but it does irk me when our place has agency drivers in on a almost permanent basis yet refuse to give the full timers a payrise. Maybe this is why they have trouble filling posts.

In contrast, I know one agency driver that has been with the same company for over two and a half years, working full time hours week in and week out, but it company ‘policy’ to have fifty percent of their workforce as temps, so those temps will never have the opportunity of a permanent job with them. I can actually think of a few other UK businesses, where agency drivers are for all intent and purposes full time employees with a client, but without legal definition or employment rights.
A mate of mine has been called by three different agencies recently, offering him a “class 2 job with a blue chip client in Banbury for around £35k per year.” Pretty obvious who this is, and my mate pointed out how can it be £35k per year when he’d be out of a job post Christmas party rush.
One agency even hung up on hearing that.
its simple you can cancel an agency guy during quiet times and not have to pay them, you cant with full time drivers.
you can get extra support in and pay for the busy times, so you have flexibility as a company owner.
