you don’t need to put your glasses on, just increase the font size of the web page windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/wind … t-explorer

Hi. as has been mentioned before as an agency driver i get to decide when I want to work usually with better earnings as well
also if i dont want to work for a particular company for whatever reason i dont
having had … PROPER JOBS … working for various companies for 15 years doing u.k./European
and working long stupid hours ,being paid a flat rate and being told i was lucky to have a job
i finally went full time agency in 2006 and have not looked back since
originally working though nova (smc/umbrella) and then going full L.T.D. company in 2008 when the goverment moved the goalposts.
ok there are times when the work slackens off but this does give me time to do other things
personally i am finding that there is more than enough agency work to do and there is no need to take any job at any rate
im with a local agency who are very good at getting work and are a lot more organised than larger more national companies whose offices clase at 17.00 and will not answer the phone e.t.c.
ok i have the hassle of office work to do but its not that hard
The main thing is i get PAID BY THE HOUR so at least if im stuck on the M25 at rush hour im getting paid for it instead of seeing my weekly wages getting diluted by the minute.
if you are happy working direct for an employer great good for you its your choice. im happy doing what i do it gives me flexability to have a social life and goto events at the weekend i DO NOT work over christmas/new year as many drivers are forced to do.

Pimpdaddy:
I like the idea of zero hours direct for the company, cut out the agency idiots & their bs, come & go as you please, best of both worlds:mrgreen:

Actually it’s the worst of both worlds, come and go as THEY please, not you. Usually similar hourly rate to ‘contracted hours’ lads, so less than agency… Mental

Cant see how your suppose to make a decent living doing agency work is as and when required, if your wheels aint turning , you aint earning …

Certainly for them folks with a family and young kids, full time offers more security doesn’t it ■■?

Yeah, what suits you best is down to your personal situation. No right or wrong really (though i do have a profound hatred of the leeches who run agencies). Ive recently been offered full time but have chosen to tread water for the reasons quoted above. I WILL be enjoying a nice christmas break this year without having to beg anyone for it, and if i want time off for any reason, theyll just have to ■■■■ it up. Theyll drop me as soon as it suits, so ■■■■■■■■ to em.

yes we know you will, until april, that wont be by your choice will it
agencies wont have fa for you to do

  Guess i`ll have to re-kindle my joinery skills for a little while!

might be different down here in the southwest, but I had 3 days off at christmas by choice, other than that worked right through on agency, along with quite a few others with choice of jobs. so much agency bashing by those in the “know” each to their own but im sticking with a higher rate of pay, and choice of when and where im working thanks.

It all depends on who you’re on for at the time & what they do. I packed in a full time job on 4th jan, started with agency on 6th jan & have worked, when I wanted, ever since. Previous to that I’ve started with agency in November expecting to finish after Xmas only to be kept on until I left voluntarily the following May.

you’ll be working for a agency. they supply temp labour
well obviously if your an ex sas man and signed with a agency who specialise in secret service work then you will be busy when no one else is

If someone would give me a job of just doing RDC runs then I’d bite their hands off.

Nothing but RDC runs for a living :open_mouth: That’s one way to kill your enthusiasm for the HGV driving game, given your a newbie I’d rethink that!

Driving up and down the motorway, not having to handball. Sounds like my idea of fun. Just as long as I don’t have to go near the Dartford crossing I’m a happy trucker.

Is it? I guess each to their own but…

Most jobs involving RDC trunking are in new or nearly new trucks. There is generally a set start time and set run, so you are reasonably likely to be able to calculate your return time. There is little or no hand balling. The routing is a doddle because it’s all main routes and motorway. If it’s night trunking, there’s very little traffic and places are often less busy. The places you are going are generally designed for easy access by a truck. Some have very good facilities (at least a loo without half an inch of ■■■■ on the floor). Finally, some of the best hourly rates can be found doing this kind of work.

So, ■■■■ easy work, easy routes, reasonable motors, no hand balling and among the best hourly rates you’ll get. The worst you can say is it’s a bit boring. But, I’m never bored when I’m earning some excellent coin for doing very little!

What’s not to like?

Amen. :grimacing:

So i am a newbie and glad to see the last post that as a newbie sometimes agencies do still hav eowrk after xmas…going to jack in my office job November and do Class 2…should pass by then or poss Class 1 Dec…here’s hoping but little bit scary to think that might not be enough work after xmas

There is always work.

True Radar but I will be very green behind the ears still and more experienced drivers might be preferred??

I only passed my test last month and I’ve been driving for less than a month so I’m as green as you are. For Class 2 its multidrop mostly. Personally I hate multidrop thats why I’m doing my class 1 when I get the money together. I did some RDC runs with a local company through a local agency which I loved doing.

I think I will hate multi drop too…but to prevent ranting on too much and digress away from the title of this thread i have PM’d you radar…

From what I have been told about Agency work…back in the day I used to do Warehouse work for agencies and have been told it is very different as a driver even after xmas…drivers always going to be in need esp after CPC dealine etc

If by sas you mean Saturday & Sunday I don’t work weekends, see what I did there?
It’s not that hard to get work all year round if that’s what you want. The first job I was on about starting in November was night trunking to a hub, that’s all year round work with no drop off after new year. This year started on 6 jan taking parts from port of Tyne to Nissan, jacked in this job in June as I didn’t like the umbrella scheme. Now doing fridge work taking meat into greggs, told for the forseeable future probably permanent next month. Time to move on soon I think.

All I’ve ever known is agency. Same with anything, you live to what you know. I’m mid 30’s, never had a mortgage (always paid outright), never had a nice car on the tick, not got any expensive hobbies. So don’t see the point in a full time job. Don’t know what you guys earn but I can do 4 days, either direct to company or agency and take home £450 average. And to be honest, my biggest fear is to become a moaning know it all driver who is so highly self appointed, and just moan like buggery. All firms have them, giving the office staff a mouthful, moaning about the lorries, moaning about the runs, moaning that they’re left testicle is warmer than the right, everything’s wrong, nothings right, and I think a few should be reminded that it’s not they’re name on the truck. Plus i find I can only learn a lot more about trucking experiencing different work, fleets, size of fleets, which will all contribute to me hopefully becoming an owner driver very soon.and as for no work till may, at worst, I think I’ve had the first three weeks in January, where all I got was 1 day a week, but as I said, u live to what you know.

I love your thinking and way of life…nothing on the tick or hire purchase
Also - good point about it what you know…I have pretty much always worked for comoanies and anything else is slightly out my comfort zone…I think it will be best for me so I can get as much different and varied experience as poss in early days.
