Has anyone got an ‘idiots guide’ to what it means to be, either; limited, or umbrella in regards to working for an agency. And in real world terms, what it means for someone just starting off as a driver? Would I have to fill out a tax return or such? Do I need an accountant etc?
If you need to ask that question, then the answer is yes!
And until you learn the differences, then PAYE is the was to go pal…
Yes. And I’m sure Evil would agree that the agency’s version of why you should come off PAYE, is not one to trusted.
They have their own agenda. Coming out of PAYE may work for some but not for the unwary. Might work for a experienced people intending staying self employed but not worth doing short term whilst looking for a perm job. Lots of threads on it on.

Don’t be afraid of lying to a agency to get work. They will have no issue with lying to you.
The trouble is ,They think they are licenced to lie ,And if they catch you lying ,and you fall out.these twits will email Every local agency to ruin your chances .
I know this after years of using them as a welder ,A very talented guy who worked for me told them he was coded to a basic 4872 .he was not .he lost the job and years later found out that these leeching nobodies had done the above.
He now owns a fab shop .he winds these leeches up when they approach him to supply labour .
Best thing we could do is all email every job they advertise then ignore there calls .We could cause the twunts some of there own crap.
Slightly OT but as it’s an idiots guide I think this is worth noting.
Some agencies are not members of ‘agency regulatory bodies’. The largest seems to be the REC/IRP but there are others. If you have issues you can use these guy to lean on lazy/incompetent agencies.
You’re not likely to make any friends in doing so but if you’re having to use them you’re probably already over the threshold.
In my limited experience so far AVOID and agencies that are not affiliated.
I’m currently also investigation the merit of ‘a’ union membership. TBA.

I’m no TAX expert as to me it’s tedious, but I know enough to know the differences and pitfalls.
And that’s ignoring as you say the agency’s agenda, which won’t be in the workers interests…
The agency don’t want the hassle of doing your payroll, and they probably get commission from their ‘sister’ umbrella company.
As for the details on how bent some of these setups are, let them google ‘think accountancy’
Personally for me, the benefit of being self employed over PAYE died when they stopped the mileage allowance, so I limp PAYE all the way now…
Having been a taxi driver for 8 years, I can tell you that doing it self-employed is an utter ■■■■■■■ ballache. When you get home from work absolutely knackered, you don’t want to sit for another 20 hours fiddling with bloody papers.
Personally I take PAYE, make my tax affairs someone else’s problem. I’ve done it through the agency directly rather than via an umbrella - I couldn’t see what the benefit of an umbrella company was and just sounded weird. “You might pay less tax” just says to me “HMRC audit”.
