They say one thing but you know that they mean something totally different. Just thinking of the amount of one liners the agency spiel off to you, I’ve had several this past couple of weeks.
Including :
I’ve got the times wrong it’s 6pm not 4am that job…translated it means “I’ve given it to somebody else”.
There’s nothing on at the minute…translates to “I’ve given my favourites the work first”.
There’s a job for such and such a firm starting at 3am and I thought I’d give you first option…translates to “Other drivers have knocked it back because of the stupid start time and your a soft touch so you’ll do it”
Heard all the best ones recently. Definitely shouldn’t have dropped things at a moments notice last year. They forget those moments so easily don’t they !!
We are dropping the rate by a pound an hour because of the recession and to stay competitive. = We have seen a good opportunity and excuse to screw another quid out of the job and not lose face,… and more money for us.

Any more ? They think we’re thick !
True … they also bleed you dry and take every extra penny they can and care nothing for you in real life.
They book you on a tuesday for the upcoming weekend, then call friday afternoon and tell you “The client has cancelled a lot of shifts for this weekend” = we just booked as many as we could in case the work came in.
D’ya not?:

That actually happens more often than you might think and it’s certainly not done for fun. Weekend work is a PITA for agency staff, trust me. Some of our big clients (Trade Team, Hays and NFT were the worst offenders) would book a raft of drivers, you’d confirm them then five minutes later they’d either cancel or swap the start time to something your man couldn’t do 'cos of the hours. So you had to juggle drivers, which ■■■■■■ them off of course because they’ve already planned for their day ahead and now its changed. You also had to take into account which drivers can go where, either by their choice or by dint of inductions etc.
Usually it’s a knock-on effect which trickles down the line; it’s easy to blame the agency but when a job gets cancelled they lose out too, contrary to what some believe they’re businesses not registered charities and as such are supposed to make a profit.
Inevitably once you’d changed everything round and got it sorted, the phone would ring and it’d change again. Bloody nightmare and I’m glad I don’t do it any more.
Yep heard them all now ive decided this year no more will i wait for the phone call and wait in limbo for the next day but will tell them they are to late ive already arranged something for tommorow even if its fishing or sitting on my arse.
Who where the last 6 companies you worked for as we need referances before we can give you any work =
in other words who have you worked for so we know who to ring up for new jobs and give the work to our regular drivers
the agency im with phone me and say got a shift 6am tommorow at 8pm in the evening i say who for the usual company i work for no only toscos as eveyone gone quiet your the only driver with a shift tommorow i point out that i hate toscos and do not want their work and when i go past the company who i usully work for evey unit is out and when i next look at the log in agency book for that day see 20 odd agency drivers have been it. gettin paranoid now i am the last to be called.
It’s a long term / full time / temp to perm contract.
On a Friday, “the guy you’ve been covering for is back Monday, so we won’t need you next week”
On the Monday, “We’ve got work Tue - Fri this week if you want it”
On the Wednesday, “Dont need you for the rest of the week”
Do your own translations, but we’ve all heard it, I just love the fact that I tell them to stuff it if I get messed about, move onto another agency or just enjoy a few days off, but it just feels better.
The company really likes you, ey yes thats good jim but is it perm and full-time ■■
Yes yes its perm and full-time
So I’m not going to be stuck at home 2-3 days a week ?
Ahhh well no that shouldn’t happen
so and so have just come on, they’ve need someone at 11am = I gave this to somebody else yesterday and left you out but now they have phoned in as they can’t be bothered going in so we knew you would be stupid enough to think we are telling the truth and stupid enough to drop everything and go in !

Some Companies try to book you in but pay you from the Time you get the Job.So they do it booking you for 04.00 and you seat 2 Hour for nothing.Later when it changes to the new System is not much difference. We always went Home and took a Day off in such Case and they finished doing it.
There’s nothing on at the minute…
They also give Work sometimes to other Agencies as Self-Promotion
There’s a job for such and such a firm starting at 3am and I thought I’d give you first option…
Many Retailers start between 02.00 and 04.00
Any more ? They think we’re thick !
They even may change Address and not giving it to you so you cant pop in my mistake

When they call you and say…“such and such company just rang and asked for you”.
Which translates to…
“No other [zb] will do it!”
I did wounder when i used to be a drivers mate for Cleanaway. I used to get “Mick, Cleanaway have asked for you as they like you, are you willing to do a 4am start?”
They did pay well though. I once got £150 for a nights work from Cleanaway
