NZ JAMIE:
I have been reliably informed by a well know West Midlands restorer of Ergo’s that the Asian Transport MM6 has been found and is in reasonable condition. How good would that be to see it restored to it original condition.
Hiya if the Asian tsp AEC is still around it should go to Newark next year for the AEC100.
Jamie not knocking you but the asian tsp AEC is really a MM8 it was cut down when new at southall, i would think it was to make space for the sleeper and still have 20ft space for the box…my mm6 is only 15ft from the cab to the back cross member
witch i thought was the standard for the mm6 double drive spec…thinking on it was a wonder that AEC was willing to build a special i thought it was take it or leave it with chassis lenghts.

That one went to Afghanistan driven by Gordon Pearce who is on TN somewhere. Oh yes it did the job alright.
i just cant imagine travelling so far in an old AEC ,but then again they were at the top of the tree when that was built so i suppose its like going over in the equivalent Scania or Volvo of today but much harder work , colder and very uncomfortable.Im driving a DAF CF 8 wheeler at the moment and the engine warning light came on last monday and im still using it,every hill it comes to the thing dies (8 mph out of Bradford this morning up hill).but not so long ago that was the norm how soon we forget and get used to creature comforts
That’s a cracker of an Ergo MM there Bill mate, love it. I can just hear that 760 working hard. It’s a shame you blokes didn’t get them with Fuller boxes, they go much better with one of them.
3300 John mate, thanks for the info,I’m sure I knew it was an mm8 less an axle, but I must have forgotten.
Here’s my mate’s '67 Marshal which I fix up and get the chance to drive, great old truck very original,AEC 505 with 6 speed crash box,I love loading her right up and taking it for a drive, I’ve had a few drivers of modern trucks look at me funny and must think poor bugger he still driving one of them!
A well known West Midlands Ergo restorer was over here last year,he was good company to have in the cab and a master at the six speed.

Nice motor Jamie are there many AECs over there ?
I can’t think of any still working, but off the top of my head I can think of at least a dozen Ergo mm8’s that are either parked up,in sheds, due for restoration of have been restored.
I also know of a couple of Monarchs and a couple of Marshal’s. The great thing about NZ is there were heaps of them back in the day and people hold on to things,so there are more out there I’m sure.
Here’s another pic of the Marshal well loaded, jeese she worked had with that old banga’ up it’s arse.
I’d never had to come down in to second with the Marshal until I put this MM8 on the back, but that day on some of the hills I was down there in second a few times,at 6mph. Great stuff I love it,trucks are for working.

Out of all the British lorry manufacturers AEC was virtually the only one that was very willing to modify standard chassis specifications to what a customer wanted. There are literally thousands of amended chassis / driveline specs in the AEC chassis build sheets archive at the museum at Leyland. BRS and Harold Wood were just two major customers that had their own specifications but AEC would also build ‘one-offs’ for the small family business who might only run a couple of AECs.

Glad to see you`re back ,got any new books on the horizon ■■?/
I would if I could, but I’m too old and creaky now (and not physically capable).
I’m happy now to live on my memories, I had a good life ‘on the road’.
an AEC man through and through.
I dont know if you remember Robinsons at Triangle near Halifax GOM .They did livestock and had a 1968/9 6 wheeler Marshall . Anyway i was going down the M1 coming towards Tinsley Viaduct one morning this would have been 1990 ish and Robinsons Marshall was coming past me.He was loaded with livestock and i thought i will be past him up the other side.Nope off he went up the hill and away. It would have been a 505 then because they didn’t fit the 760 while about 1973.What a flyer
I have VERY fond memories of my brand new Marshall (5177 WY) , Hendrickson rear bogie. A great machine , a sleeper cab would have made it a fantastic motor. 1st trip out with it I got ‘pulled’ at the top of Alnwick Bank in Northumberland, the …ahem…police officers were not happy with the exhaust smoke, (they couldn’t make it smoke) couple of jobsworths. All AEC’s, new and old, smoked a bit when pulling hard.
“on your way driver”…“thank you officer, have a nice day”
Would that have been the Marshall with the full screen similar to the Mercury mkv? Cyril Whitleys from Saltaire had one. I have a photo somewhere when they converted it to a wrecker. The animal as it was known
