On page 6 of the latest Truck and Driver,Feb 2010,there’s an article about how middle east transport is making a comeback.
There’s a photo of a mid 60’s AEC artic, parked on the side of the road(somewhere in Europe i’d say) and the driver cooking on the hard shoulder. The driver is recognisable.
The unit is yellow with green roof and pulling a green, tandem box van.
Bolted to the front, upper third of the trailer,is what seems to be the drivers sleeping area.
The only identity visible is a Diss telephone number.
It’s an interesting photo and judging by the vehicle it must have been one of the first on middle east work.
Anyone know anything about the lorry, firm or driver.

Sounds like it could be Fridged Freight of Diss, they had some cracking outfits in the 60s, they were ahead of their time, running at 44 tons then
In that case, what i thought was driver accomodation,is probably an early fridge motor.
The clue’s in the title i guess.
There is someone who post’s on this forum who worked for ‘Fridged Freight’ in the 60’s and has recalled his experiences from back in those early pioneering days. Sorry but can’t remember the posters name at the moment but ‘LB76’ rings a bell might be wrong on that though

It is LB76 Dave,he has a Frigid Freight AEC as his avatar.
Hi,
I think LB76 Dave may have a Scania Vabis LBS 76 as his avatar.

Yes 44 tons, but they probably only carried 22tons, some of their home built outfits could have weighed 22ton empty
If I remember right the drawbar trailer (home built) behind the LBS 76 had the rear axle of an AEC with the diff removed and a blanking plate fitted to the banjo . When I worked at Scania agents B&W I can remember towing one of Wyatts (fridged freight) with a new 140 unit and it really
knew that lot was behind it!
In the early Scania import days 4x2 units were hard to get ,many imported units were 6x2 with an electric/hydraulic trail axle
and got cut to 4x2’s, I think that the fridged freight rigid may well have been a stretched unit.
davnic, fridged freight (aka john wyatt junior) have their own thread on here if you do a search, they didn’t do middle east but pioneered italy and other places from the 50s - i’m guessing that the photo in T&D could be one of LB76 (Bill)'s
Don’t know about middle east but they went over the Bosphorous at Istanbul into Asia!
I remember when I was working on Keele MSA doing recovery in 1969,we used to get their AEC eight leggers with drawbars on calling in from time to time.
Don’t remember what the thread was,but there was quite a discussion and a load of pics on an earlier thread.
I’ve tried all variations of “Fridged Freight” on the search engine here but for some reason got no results!
Asian transport/astran ran at least 1 aec in there early days. Trucker ash posted a pic of one snowed in up a mountain in turkey in the 1960s

Thank you jj72,Churchyboy has added the link.

fridged freight - OLD TIME LORRIES, COMPANIES AND DRIVERS (INTERACT - Trucknet UK
Thanks Churchboy.
Seems that i wasn’t seeing things after all.
The last post on the above link, shows the very vehicle pictured in T & D,and a confirmation that the box mounted on the front of the trailer is indeed a sleeper pod.
The Driver in the picture is Jim McCluskey. It is was taken around 1966 during a trip to Rome.Fridged Freight ran most types of AEC including very heavy eight leggers as you mentioned above.
what a great photo doing europe mustve been a challenge in that back then.
There is a good article on John Wyatt in this months edition of Truck & Driver.

Driver is Jimmy Macclusky, the company was fridged freight from diss (norfolk) and they never did middle east work, take my word for it.
