I worked for A.E.Evans for ten years but I can’t remember ever seeing this Mandator with a sleeper/kennel.It must have been the only sleeper cab on their fleet.

Probably not directly on the thread but thought someone might enjoy these pictures…
That reg no Hat rings a bell (no pun intended) - The 1st photo . . was it originally from Hull ?
Bloody sure an old tm of mine had that motor, converted it into a beavertail and used it to take his Fordson tractor to vintage shows.

hiya,
Did’nt care for the tip-up shed AEC’s Chris, much preferred the Park Royal cab they just seemed like a proper motor to me you felt like you was sort of driving something stable this model was bloody awful tractor only.
thanks harry long retired.

I left in 1979 Harry and I think this went over the watter, looks like some discharge gear on the unit? I came off a MK5 onto a “D” reg tilt cab and I wanted me MK5 back,it was only the extra cash that persuaded me to stay on it.I had a new secondhand one later on a “M” plate and it was better than the older one.I remember the overnight bag and all the bloody paperwork sliding about if you braked a bit sharp. The first ones had air assisted wipers - remember them - and until the mirrors were moved forward it was like driving blind in the wet.
At first glance I thought it was a Buffalo but the headlights were in the front bumpers, wish I knew the reg number.

hiya,
Yes Chris those air wipers was rubbish and having to run about with the rags tied to the mirror arms to try and keep the glass clear, did,nt get lumbered with the ergo’s much but i did’nt like them.
thanks harry long retired.

Could have been worse, you could have had the “Threpenny bit” Fg
It was originally with the City & County of Kingston Upon Hull Fire Brigade and it was sold and as you so rightly say it was converted into a beavertail truck to transport a vintage tractor (well I think it’s a tractor) HAT 207 is in blue now or is that my age and colourblindness kicking in? I have no idea whatsoever what cam od the boom package or where it went to.
It was one of the first Simon hydraulic platforms in the UK, the oriignal being on a Bedford TK chassis, Lincs had a similar AEC/Simon vehicle but with a two man cab, based at Skegness.
I’ve been searching high and low for a picture of HAT since it’s conversion, to no avail - yet! However, I did find this one, not sure which brigade it was with…
chris when you worked for ae evans did you ever drive a mickey mouse foden eight wheeler;i did see one parked on devonshire road in maltby in the late 60s early70s.regards paul motyka.

Paul I don’t think he would be capable of using a Foden 12 speed box

Hi Paul.No mate not mine.A.E.Evans never ran Fodens,99.9% were AECs.I didn’t start at MFS until 1979 and never lived in Maltby - I’m a dee-dah .
And Sammie those 12 speed boxes wouldn’t have been a problem,it would have been a change to have more gears than 5 or 6.
Might have been a bit of grating and clunking for a start mind yer…
hi lads thomas bell had a fleet of mandators waggon and drags, inverness was a 5 day job in them days ,anyone remember the dig at 49 longman rd, this photo was taken at the D-O-Y AT FENHAM BARRICKS, 1963, happy days

Until I got a Marathon I’d never driven owt with more than 6 in a box. I think Evans bought a secondhand Mandator with a Fuller 9-speed that ran out of Barking and I heard that it was a really nice motor, the Fuller making a big difference.Unusual for them to buy owt out of normal spec, could have been a rumour

Aye,get one in John.I remember getting a lift over Woodhead in a Mandator with the Fuller box,W.H.Martin from Brigg it was.I was impressed to say the least.
If I save up can I come and see that MK5 when it’s ready .
