I have been out of the industry for more than 20 years, that’s driving professionally. I have been working as a self employed driving instructor teaching Cat C LGV before DCPC and mostly cars and B+E. At the age of 63 thinking of returning to the trucks. I have only done 1 day driver DCPC, can I still do another 4 days to get card ?
Question 2 are there any easy jobs out there for someone my age 3/4 days a week. Sadly need must for the next 3 years till I am 66.
In the past I was an owner driver with a RSA CPC in the day of NEWLANDS Transport.Exeter based.

Assuming that you did that one course within the past five years the answer is yes.

As above.

I’ve just done almost exactly this, save C & CE had fallen off my licence (and the ‘check site’ too) as I hadn’t done the medical due about 2012.
So I got the medical done, sent off the medical forms, and my licence returned with correct categories on it.
Then I sent off for the Digi Taco card, sat 5 days of CPC (which I found worthwhile) and now just waiting for the DQC to land.

I am gonna do a 2 hour practical refresher before I let myself loose on the public too.

At the age of 63 il be retired.

The guy has just said ‘‘Needs must’’ :bulb:
Maybe he would if he could eh?

Il be retired when im 63.

I was gonna say I still wanna be a pornstar when I’m 63

Hi try fowler welch should be just right for you they have a depot at newton Abbott

The reason I said needs must is I have not work full-time since 2013 due to travelling the world, Yes we have money in saving for retirement but having been home since Mid November doing nothing but cleaning the house, cars motorhome & boats it just so boring not to have anything to do. Plus it cost to live with food, council tax, water rates 3 vehicle insurances, MOT’s etc. Saving soon disappear.

Wishful thinking or really going to happen

Easiest jobs are trunking between depots, although you might be seen as a lesser driver for not dealing with the daytime traffic and BMWs.

Only trouble is a lot of that is nightshift but personally I’d avoid most pallet companies as curtainsiders are an absolute pain in Winter (keep saying I going to quit it). Fridges are probably a good option.

Would think there’s a few foodie companies down Exeter way. They might do 4 on 4 off if thats any good, many do it now.

As you’ve been an instructor you’ll know quite a bit about the traffic issues. Only problem you might have is because you’ve not driven class C or C+E for a while, insurance companies might regard you as “new” but large companies won’t care.

Btw, don’t forget to order the tacho card.

This might be a bit leftfield, but what about doing the buses. They load and unload themselves you know.! Doesn’t have to be service work but theatre runs and sports clubs bowlers etc. I have done this for twenty odd years and tagged along to some events. As you have been an instructor you will have people skills.

Hope you do, I thought I would be but the wife swapping me for someone else has stopped that

Hi Mike

Have a look and see if there is a DPD near you. Linehaul is nights but normally ‘drop, sleep and swop’ and they pay OK. No manual handling

Always makes me smile when i hear people talk about their retirement…cant wait…most of em say…but as a word of warning, i always say…have you checked to see what money you will have to live on…as its a bit daunting when you have been taking home £500 a week, then find you only have a basic state pension, and that has to cover your way of life you had pre pension days…maybe a smoke, a beer, a restaurant or night out somewhere , then all the bills still have to be paid, insurances rent/mortgage maybe the car too…thank god i`m mortgage free, but the bills still mount up i can tell ya…and thats with 2 homes although my foreign one is a lot cheaper.

Good luck Mike. Top attitude getting out and working. You have a life of experience and that will be valued. I always have respect for older guys (usually 70 plus) who still put a shift in and am happy to help out physically if I can.

Did fowler welsh subbing for another company yesterday. A total doddle just a little boring. If you do it then invest in a kindle.

Realistically avoid curtainsider work, and flat bed work. Fridge work would probably suit you bust. Just don’t be scared to say no if they want you to climb in the trailer with a pump trolley.

“Use it! Or Lose it!”
Im not saying all of those past fifty or sixty should be sprinting up flights of stairs in flats doing parcel deliveries, but if you are reasonably fit, and stay active then tautliners etc arent that bad. Sit on your ■■■■ all the time, and before long you won`t be capable of anything physical, either for work or leisure.
Pushing a pallet truck is as good as going to the gym.

And is cheaper.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m on a weight loss/health kick at the moment. Lost 10kg already.

I have no problem getting into the back of the trailer and helping. In fact I have no problem in a bit of handball either. But if I were close to retirement and having not done that sort of thing for years I might not feel the same.
