Advice

Hi All

Im looking for some advice, since being a school leave, Ive worked in an office environment starting at the bottom and getting all the way to management in a none haulage industry…
After 20 or so years of being in this job, I found my self bored out my skull, unhappy…the company, lets just say they really didn’t know how to look after the loyal staff, the good one where leaving in drones and the newbies well I certainly wouldn’t have give them a job…all hot air and no action… all for the glory and none of the hard work… seeing this and staff cuts…but it was time to do something as backup/ insurance

Maybe is was the advertising BS of better pay, maybe it was the calling of the open road…but I swallowed it hook line and sinker and did my class two and class one, which I paid for out of my own pocket back in 2008 with a view of jumping ship…
But all didn’t go according to plan…getting the licences and tacho cards no issue, finding places to give you a chance at the same time as start of the recession…and the 2 year none experience issue, so I left it and kept safe with a job I knew blindfolded…
I did try and get some part time work, whilst still in full time, but again it brick walls with this due to WTD…but I did manage to get some one class 2 and 1 work, days here and there so it gave me a little bit of experience…

Anyway to cut a story short, I ended up injuring my back in 2011, took some time off work 3 months but due to the financial situation I ended up going back to work even though I was still in of pain but manageable …I lasted for about 12 months before I went off again with same back issues… but even worse. Dr’s won’t do surgery, have had injections after injections and weeks and weeks of physio to try and help with the back problem to get some better mobility but my employer decided that it was taking to long and terminated my contract end of 2012/2013 and since then Ive been on a sabbatical from work for further treatment which hasn’t worked plus fighting the man who reckons Im fit for work… :unamused:

During this year I’m making improvements and the pain is less as the months go by, my plan / goal is I want to use this licence which cost me a bundle to do… my DCPC is up to date…
So can anyone tell me how to proceed forward, should I do a refresher course with one of them training companies or should I just dive straight in and start applying for work when Im ready…
Or better still should I volunteer to spend a few nights / days with a regular and see how my back copes with it all… I don’t have a pot of gold or much money to spare… most of what I get goes on my kids

No ones replied so here are my thoughts

You have left or was made to leave an office job due to back problems and have had some unsuccessful medical interventions. You make it sound like at the moment you are signing on and getting some kind of additional financial help due to your medical condition. If I have read this wrong then I’m sorry but thats the way it comes across to me anyway.

You have a HGV licence with some limited experience and want to now move into a full time job driving as your condition is improving?

Heres the thing - You say that the “man” says that you are fit for work but you are arguing with this person and saying that you are not? So which is it? The reason I ask this is because transport is hardly and industry that is full of sympathy at the sharp end - they just want things done.

Also you are moving from an office job to a manual job which will involve you shifting the load at some point? I just don’t get what your asking? If you are nearly fit to drive just get onto some agencies and get around some local hauliers. Its Christmas and many places are desperate for drivers. This is the perfect time to get some experience.

What ever you do - good luck and I hope it works out

Have a look in the health forum in my name there is some info in there
