Advice Wanted on Running a Truck Around Europe

Hi all

Non-trucker here (but always wanted to be one!). Apologies if this is not the right place to post this.

I work for a manufaturing company which currently uses the usual big-name couriers to deliver our product. We’ve never been happy with the service we’ve received, but after substantial growth over the last few years we’re wondering if we’re now in a position to handle the deliveries ourselves, in particular to our subsidiary offices around Western Europe.

I’m wondering if a regular round trip delivering and collecting at each of the following places in a rigid would be do-able in a week?..

Cambridge, UK -->Tilburg, Netherlands → Oberursel, Germany → Milan, Italy → Marseille, France -->Lyon, France → Cambridge.

I’m also wondering if there are any other opportunities for us, e.g. all our subsidiary offices are registered as limited companies in their own country, so could we take advantage of any favourable tax rates by registering the vehicle at one of the above instead of in the UK? Obviously it would make sense to use a LHD truck as it would be spending 90% of its week in mainland Europe, so could we buy one much cheaper abroad?

I would be extremely grateful if any of you would be willing to share your knowledge and opinions on what our options are.

Taking a quick glance you would not be able to complete all those destinations within one week. You are looking at a 1.5/2day trip to Milan alone.

I an no expert at all when it comes to holding an operators licence in a foreign country and or the operation of a foreign registered vehicle. If you are carrying your own goods or goods purchased for yourselves then you would only require an own account (restricted) license. This would enable you to operate within the countries you have stated collecting your own goods or those purchased for your business.

For obvious reasons it could be beneficial for you to run the operation internally. For instance you would not be paying an outside company for the service and the profit in which they calculate. In addition you would have more control over your own consignments. But it could also be less cost effective on a like for like basis.

It could well be cheaper and more probable to run the complete operation from one of the other European sites you have listed inclusive of the employment of driver, vehicle running costs and alike. For instance in Europe as a UK registered vehicle you face significant disadvantages in comparison to home registered vehicles on the basis of Vehicle Excise Duty alone.

According to Googlemaps and just using the city names you have mentioned ie:- no addresses it is 2100 miles and therefore you would have no lee-way for hold ups etc. The trip would be possible but would be hard work to ensure it was done legally week after week and you wouldn`t be able to complete the trip any week in which either Germany France or Italy happened to have a bank holiday.
