Fellas,
Am after some advice. I’m just finishing a 27 year career in the Army (after the government has screwed the pension system), have my C+E but have predominantly driven rigid MAN type trucks. Am in my resettlement and have the option to do a few courses. I’m doing CPC in Jul the was thinking either ADR, HIAB etc. What would be best ? Any advice would be great,
Cheers,
Jon
1 day refresher on class 1?
If you like sleeping in your own bed go do Hiab /grab .
You will find work with an 8 wheeler tipper etc etc and Most lads doing that sleep in their own beds . Or if you like boredom and RDC ■■■■ talking a load of Bo###cks about how you singlehandedly took Goose Green do a refresher on your class one.
Or if you like being away from home do that class one refresher and tramp to your hearts content …and the divorce will follow as She has put up with enough ■■■■ in her life already in my opinion.
What do you really want to do ?
Think long and hard because being a driver Nowadays is one of the worst career moves ever in my humble opinion.
(Tin hat firmly on awaiting incoming )
Just do what you ENJOY is the best advice.
Hi jonboy.
I was in the same boat a 18 months ago.
I did a year on class 2 HIAB, was good for learning the ropes with regards to tacho and load over hang rules things like that, but the job I was doing was quite dirty (not in a good way) drops on building sites and the like. Some of the places they expected you to get the motor into was unreal.
After the year I applied for class 1 work, first interview and I was offered the job. better hours and better money. Been with the firm 5 months now and all seems to be going okay.
A lot will depend on if your a pad/ singly also the area you plan too settle in. Up here in the north west there seem to be loads of driving jobs around and I am still getting 2 or 3 calls a week with job offers from places I put my CV on.
As for class 1 refresher, If you can do some grab it, I went the other way and did agency at weekends, get paid for doing my refresher training. I enjoyed the agency lark and got to drive some nice shiny new motors, with a variety of gear boxes.
Hope it works out for you, keep smiling.
cheers
