just a few questions,
is it hard work and what are the general hours,
and anyone know of any round yorkshire willing to train up a newbie thats never done transporter work but has 10 year experience on artics?
thanks chaps
Car transporters presumably.
Its filthy, its cold, its bloody hard work, you get hurt frequently and the companies likely to give you a start have pay schemes that whilst looking good mean you have to do 2 weeks work in one to earn a decent wage.
Having said that my own feeling is that the job will be better in about 10 years, if you look at he average transporter driver they are in the their 50’s or 60’s, in another 10 years they will be gone and there are few coming up to replace them and few of the youngsters could cope with the hours, work, cold or cramped cabs, so in time they will have to compete again for quality staff.
13 to 15 hour days every day, constant push all the time.
2 companies spring to mind, Autologic at Doncaster main depot are often looking for drivers, and Paragon at Corby/Thurleigh, try the first one first… the second one is OK to learn on but new starters go on the crappiest pay scheme in the industry, so if you end up there use them to learn (and to do the inevitable damage that all newbies do) and then bugger off to pastures new.
Its not for everyone, i used to train drivers at one time and the drop out rate over the first 12 months was high, some even jacked in during training, you might take to it and you might hate every second, there’s no telling.
One thing, doesn’t matter how many years you’ve driven artics or lorry and drags, transporters especially the newer lorry and drag (but SWB tractor unit prime mover) trucks handle like nothing else at all, you have to learn to load them correctly to keep them on the road and to avoid the caravan sways, that will not be taught on the course, elephant in room if you get my meaning.
thanks very much for that…
really fancy a change from general haulage so will make the lines of enquirey,
Very welcome.
A few years on the transporters does have one positive effect though (not your knees feet and ankles mind so get good quality boots for yourself i used DeWalt Challengers), when going to interviews for other good jobs once you say what you’ve done, it has good vibes if a proper TM is interviewing.
Thank you for the inside info Juddian. I have an application form for Paragon in the drawer so here goes… Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
here you go yt

If you get an interview and they ask if you have any questions, it’s not a good idea to start with the first one you asked here
