Advice On Getting My Licence Please

Hi guys,

This is my first post so please don’t be to harsh hahaha.

After do van work for the past 3 and a half years and keep getting let down with companies promising me more money etc etc I have decided I’m going to go for my class two get a year or two’s experience under my belt then go for my class one. I was just wondering if you guys could tell me the best thing to do to get started with studying? I already have the following items to study with:

The Official DSA Theory Test For Drivers Of Large Vehicles Book
The Official DSA Guide To Driving Goods Vehicles Book
The Official Driver CPC Book
The Complete LGV & PCV Theory and Hazard Perception Test CD-Rom

Could you guys tell me what I should start with first and if I need anything else to help me along the way?

Best of luck.See you on the tarmac highways soon.

Firstly welcone to TNUK, consider getting your C+E right after your C this will give you a greater chance of getting work, a study of the drivers hours is a must.

Hi Mike and thank you for the welcome … I was thinking about doing what you said about the C+E but no one will touch me as a C+E driver without any experience with a C licence will they? That’s why I thought about just doing my C and getting the experience I need to progress.

Haha Nick, van drivers get paid rubbish money mate and I know the C licence won’t be much better but from what I was told you can earn upto £25,000 depending on the company obviously and that would be the most I’ve ever been on plus C+E I was told is between £30,000/£35,000 once again depending on the company… Have I been misinformed?

depends on where your based who your working for and the type of work and hours your expected to do .
The problem is a lot of drivers will say they take home 500 to 600 quid a week but £125 of that is night out money so it don’t really count. don’t expect to get rich theres only 1 other profession that’s treated like us drivers and that’s Nurses

I hear you mate, to be honest I don’t want to be rich I just want to earn enough to support my woman and her son and have some free cash in the bank… I’ve never had that

The info on pay you are getting is probably form experienced drivers so as a newbie you need to know what you are likely to earn especially in the first 2 years which is why I suggested reading posts from recent newbies who passed

Hi Rog, I am taking a very close look and read

When i 1st passed my test the best way to get work and experience was with a few good agencys, but now as a returning C&E driver who has been out of it for a few years i’ve now found that a lot of the good agencys are reluctant to take on newbies or older drivers like myself who are getting back into it. That said it looks like i might of got lucky with a good mon-fri 12hr shift local work at £10 per hour. not great but it’s a start & will do me.

Welcome to Trucknet!
Depending on your personal circumstances, you could also consider working nights. It’s not for everyone, but the money tends to be a bit better and the hours a bit shorter. And (for some reason) a lot of drivers don’t want to do it, so it might be an easier way to get some experience.

Good point. Thats what i started on, also not as many eyes watching when you ■■■■ up the reversing in your early years & in my experience you tend to find it a bit more laid back (not by much though).

Thank you to everyone who has commented on this thread I gratefully appreciate all your advice and I will be taking everything said seriously.

If you can afford it, go for the +E as soon as you can after the C. You will be in “learning mode” still and it will be a lot easier. Wait a couple of years and you will have some bad habits!

Welcome Newbie, Im fresh out of babies nappies in this game too. Dont always rely on Agencies, I secured this job before I even passed my class 2, I was pushed and it paid off. Im now doing monday - friday 0400 - 1500hrs, every weekend off driving a state of the art truck. A few nights out across the network and fetch home £1500 every 4 wks. The jobs what you make it, put some time and determinarion in? Explain to companies you want permanent work and as when they ask for experience…say how are you meant to get it without a chance… words like ‘i believe this would be mutually beneficial’ usually softens them up, tell them what they want to hear. First things first, licence. Get swatting and book a crash course! Regards? Ryan.

Book a training course by all means but avoid the ‘crash’ ones if you can, employers don’t like their motors bent
