My mate did it when times were good. About ten years ago he reckoned he was grossing £200 a day. Now he swears it’s half that (factor in fuel prices since then too)
He gave up leasing vans, to buy his own Sprinter. He can’t wait to pay it off so he can get out of the game. He did it for 20 years all in, started on a 7.5 for Lynx, but sacked that off after his motor got broken into with a proper shedload of mobile phones on it. Covering that lot nearly lost him his house
His. Goods on transit should have covered it so it shouldn’t have nearly cost him his home.
And yes rates for multidrop for the big boys usually via a subby company so the OD is left with about 150 a day. Can be even less on same day as everything is priced one way and they want it done for peanuts.
Hi All had my meeting last week and thought it was only fair to reply to all your posts and have to admit that most of everyone’s comments were true and to be fair I was not that hopeful of anything coming of it . But to cut a long story short the two young women that held it started by saying what everything costs ie uniform, city tracker, company stickers for the van then said expected earnings would be between 300 and 600 quid a week paying 50p a mile per job from collection point to delivery point And that every other week I must be on call to do a night in the week and another at the weekend . If you get 3/4 collections from one Area to go to a similar area it could work but when I asked they said the drivers may only do one or two jobs a day .Then to cap it all they said if you get sent north or up the road the respective depot will backload you but if they only have a collection the next morning your expected to find digs or kip in the van or back empty at your cost. At that point I politely left saying it wasn’t for me . Cannot see how anyone can make a living and fund their own van out of that and as mentioned earlier all your advice and reservations were confirmed and the grass isn’t greener believe me. Really appreciate all your feedback gents it was a great help in preparing me and in case your wondering … Citysprint.
I was getting £1 a mile for transit work in 1989…
Take this from someone who’s knows DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR THAT COMPANY have a look a cod forum. At you will NOT have double ups and reloads they turn up as often as rocking horse ■■■. I get 90ppm to 1 per mile that’s basicly an industry standard however sameday work on the decline. For them you’ll be paid 65 -70ppm one way now go do the maths
Was chatting to my mate
The biggest prob is idiots comi g into it thinking they making loads of money doing euro
For 50-70 p a mile less on the bsckload and think they making money
Then they dissapear skint but someone else there to replace them
On the Euro work some drivers average four hours sleep.Diet of garage food eating on the move. And coffee on an intravenous drip.
The whole job is worse than haulage, and more fragmented with the nationals feeding bs to would be drivers. The so called bibles don’t help either thefigures quoted in them are dream money so every one. Thinks its easy man and van is the same everyone think they can do a removal with a sprinter or trannist jumbo. There’s guys near me charging 100 quid for a 3 bed house it’s getting crazy
