Advice needed - want to become a driver

Hi everyone,

I’d appreciate some advice here. I’m thinking about starting HGV training. I love driving and would suit a job with a lot of isolation. I have a few questions-

How difficult is it to get experience after gaining the license? Most jobs I’ve looked at require at least two years experience.

I would prefer to work long distance on Europe - is it possible to go straight to driving on the continent or would I have to get experience in the UK first? I don’t mind being away for weeks at a time as I have no family responsibilities.

Will being a woman put employers off?

Thanks

Kathy

Please read all the stickies near the top of this forum before proceeding further so you do not get ripped off - one of those is the link in my signature below

We have plenty of lady LGV drivers on here so that should not be an issue

Continental drivers usually ‘cut their teeth’ in the UK first

2 years is not experience but of holding the licence - that’s not really true now that there is a driver shortage looming in many areas

Getting a full time perm job is getting better but most jobs out there are still agency temp jobs with no guarantees

welcome Kathy and good luck with your training! I for one would like to see more female truck drivers.

Follow what ROG said. When it comes to choosing your trainer, I suggest you pick a couple that sound/look good and go and visit. Have assessment drives. This will give you a feel as to whether you are happy with the set-up, vehicle and trainer. The only alternative is to book on rock solid recommendation. eg we have folks, week after week, who travel from all over the UK to train with us. They very occasionally visit beforehand but book on reputation and recommendation.

Avoid brokers at all costs. If you’re not sure if your chosen trainer is a broker, just mention the name on here and you’ll soon find out.

Fire away with any questions. The daft one is the one you didn’t ask.

Good evening and welcome …
As been said read and do your homework before spending your hard earned cash, after all you wouldn’t just buy a car without having recommendation’s and advice…

Also for newbies there are many jobs opening up now for the C (class 2 ) driver and soon for the C+E (class 1) as time creeps on drivers have left due to the DCPC ( retiring drivers and drivers with only a year or 2 who had to fund their own )
Its only a matter of time before the 2 year licence Bull will be binned …

Good luck and don’t be worried about asking questions…
Yes we bite, chew and spit at times but as long as some attempt to find out something is obvious then no question is silly …

As all forums we have the Know all’s and the Knows all of nothing but were a good bunch …enjoy

Thanks for all the replies. I will defo do my homework before choosing a training course. I’ve found all the links very informative. I’ll let you know how I get on.
