Advanced warning A36 Bath road closure

In the Spring there will be a three month closure by Brassknocker Hill to Claverton.
Diversion for all vehicles due to road slippage repairs.

That’s a shame that means a longer route to Staplemead Creamery at Frome then, at least it should be open for summer so i can view some eye candy in Bath. :sunglasses:

Three month closure of A36 near Bath because of “slope instability”

Motorists are being warned that a major section of road near Bath will be closed for up to three months after cracks appeared which suggest it could be at risk of sliding away.

The A36 between Hantone Hill in Bathampton and the centre of Brassknocker Hill in Monkton Combe will need to shut next year for necessary stabilisation work to be carried out.

The Highways Agency, which is responsible for the road, said there was evidence of “slope instability” which needed to be rectified.

That stretch of road is one of the busiest in Bath and is the main entrance to the city from Wiltshire, meaning hundreds of drivers each day will need to find alternative routes.

Highways Agency project sponsor Alex Knapp said: “Cracks in the road surface found along this section of the A36 demonstrate evidence of slope instability.

“Work to remedy this will involve installing 14 metre deep concrete piles along a 240 metre long stretch of highway in order to ensure the road is adequately supported.

“The start date for this work has not yet been finalised but it is unlikely to commence before March 2014 and may take up to three months to complete.”

During the closure traffic travelling southbound will be diverted along the A4 to Chippenham and then the A350 south to Warminster.

Traffic travelling north would follow the same route in reverse.

This is not the first time essential works have been carried out on the A36, a £3 million stabilisation project which aimed to shore up the road and stop it collapsing into the valley, took place in the autumn of 2002.

Back then businesses and residents in the area, as well as motorists, complained about the disruption it caused.

I like this bit
Traffic travelling north would follow the same route in reverse.
Some people have problems going forward let alone in REVERSE :open_mouth:

So we are expected to travel all that way in reverse are we ? That’ll be a right mare.

it’ll be a shunters job that will…

They shut it last year and caused hassle because the signs were ill placed and caused grief…

No need for artics to divert via Chippenham.Instead on a North direction turn right by the Texaco at Beckington towards Trowbidge.
Go through Southwick.
Avoid the weight limit at Newtown and follow the signs for the recycling centre on Canal Road industrial estate.
Then later you will have Cereal Partners on the right and the old Nestle factory.
You then come out North of Bradford on Avon and bypassed the weight limit.
Then on to Bathampton bypass to Tormaton and the M4.Going South, above in reverse.
