ADR

Does anyone know what I can carry in relation to diesel, amounts ect? I have a few 2000 litre bunded fuel tank I use on site for the machines and it’s dawned on me although I transport them empty can I do this?

I’m sure that someone will be along shortly quoting chapter and verse on ADR but short answer is yes as long as they are empty.

You can carry 1x 1000l (IIRC) in a 1000l tank (what you and I would call a tank but probably officially an IBC or similar), likewise you could carry 4x 45gall drums, 5 would be 1020l over your allowed limit.

You cannot carry any fuel in a tank if it holds over 1000l

Funny enough I moved a 4550l today.

I thought that maybe as its not been purged and can carry so much it might still be dangerous enough to grant ADR rules but maybe not. It’s a funny one really and I can never get to the bottom of it! In my Cpc course they said that tankers still run with the placards even after delivery because it’s actually more dangerous than fully loaded due to their air content in the tank as well, they are only truly empty when purged.

Diesel Dave is needed I think.

it’s all to do with whether it is or isn’t a tank. if it’s an IBC then it is the volume of the contents that matters - not the capacity. if its empty then its empty. VOSA may not agree - mate of mine had a run in with them lately carrying 600 litres in a 1000 litre IBC. the nice VOSA lady parked him up for about 18 hours while she argued the IBC was a 1000 litre capacity - therefore it was a 1000 litre empty or full and the small qty of gas bottles he also had made him need full ADR.

Luckily Diesel Dave spoke with the nice lady and explained what the rules actually mean.

I only just took the ADR course and clearly didn’t listen - therfore no expert :unamused:

Yeah I need him

It’s a bunded plastic tank with a built in pump ect, I don’t know if this helps.

He’s bound to be about tomorrow evening , as he’s not been on here for a few days he’s probably doing a course away from home

Hi ibson,

I’m away in Leicester this week, but I’m suffering from a really crap internet signal. :frowning:

Sorry mate but I need to ask you what permanent markings/ info plate you can see on this “tank” please?

You may see the letters “UN” in a circle, then some code… probably starts with the figures 31?
… and if it got a plastic inner, there’ll also be an “H” in the code.

Failing that, could you tell me the manufacturer’s name and any model number please?

And if you’re really stuck for getting the info, how about a piccy please?

I’ll be able to help once I’ve got some info.

I’m guessing you are talking about this sort of thing.

It’s what we plant people would call a tank, although I’m sure that a DG specialist would call it somthing different.

Also am I right in saying that there are different rules regarding these “bowsers”

Depending on if it is mounted on a trailer or not. Or did I dream that one up?

It’s like the top one! Thanks 8 wheels! We have a few different sizes, all bunded, no markings on them though…

Hi ibson,

Thanks to 8wheels

I think I know what the green one is, but could I please ask for this info just to be sure?

The yellow trailer mounted in 8wheels’ 2nd pic is easy… it’s a steel IBC, therefore it’s a package, not a tank.

I think this is the best I can do, there is no stickers on my tank, worn off or been bashed off, this a nearly identical, tank!

It’s actually this shape, not that it matter on the shape lol

Hi 8wheels,

The yellow item in the pic is a steel IBC, but the fact that it’s mounted on a trailer makes no difference.

hi dd,

at work (agriculture) we have a similar thing to the yellow bowser, but it’s a metal shell with a plastic tank inside and fitted with a pump, iirc it’s 1100L. what would be the deal with that as regarding carrying red diesel?

cheers, steve

I thought that someone once said that with wheels it was then classed as a tank. I’m sure someone with some knowledge suggested it.

Hi 8wheels,

It would be classed as a tank in certain circumstances, but I can see enough info in the pic to tell me that the yellow thing is an IBC, and therefore counts as a package.

I suspect that the big green item is different, so that’s my reason for asking ibson for more info before I can say for sure.

Hi Steve,
Sorry mate, but I need to ask you the same questions please…

1.) What permanent markings/ info plate you can see on this “tank” please?

2.) You may see the letters “UN” in a circle, then some code… probably starts with the figures 31?

Once I know this, I’ll probably be able to give you an accurate answer.

No
999 Liter
By 1000 liter you already on ADR
Its like the Digi tacho. If you drive 4h 30 min you get an Infringement as you have to stop at 4h 44min 59 second to be legal.
But it was you could carry up to 1000 Liter without running as ADR.But that was 5 Year ago.So dont know everything about changes

Sorry, but you’re not correct.

The limit for the carriage of diesel fuel in packages is 1,000 liters.
If you exceed 1,000 liters, then ADR applies.
This is nothing to do with any new changes to ADR, because this hasn’t changed for many years, and it was certainly the case 5 years ago.

The same applies to the drivers’ hours rule.
4h :30mins is the limit you mentioned.
If you exceed 4h :30mins, then you have an infringement.

:bulb: It’s not very helpful when make up your own limits, cos then you’ll say something that isn’t true.
