“Is that Good?”
No it’s Barclays finding another way to give out unsecured personal loans to everybody at high rates of %, for one year course it might show some benefit but lgv or other it’s probably better to shop around and forget the interest paid period. Secured, (own your own house etc) can be got at 4.5%-6.75%…
I was just passing on response to question about CDL being available for ADR.
I just spoke to my bank which is Barclays. A secured loan is available for a minimum of 5k. Unsecured for a minimum of 1k. A career development loan is available for courses costing beween 300 - I think 10 k pounds but I think they only help you with 80% of fees if I remember correctly and that’s if the course is recognized by them but I think it’s already been established that the ADR is acceptable to them for funding. If they deem that you have access to funds which they believe will enable you to do the course the they’ll turn you down. I think I’ll just pay for it in 1 hit. One would have thought I wanted a 125% loan on an overpriced shoe-box sold as a house.
If this thread is accurate, it seems better to save up the cash (difficult at present I know) to do traning, and then claim it back, rather than taking out a loan?? At least if you save up, you’ll know you can afford it
IF as it seems, expenses accrued soley as a consequence of your work can be claimed, think of the possibilities…
Complete licence fee’s (C, C+E, including theory test)
HIAB
CPC training
Drivers hour guard
Digi tacho
Boots
10 year licence renewl fee for photo…
If all this is possible, why isn’t this the most popular thread on this site?

It may have happened at some tax office but as a result of an over-sight by some official but I wouln’t count on this being the case in general. Anyway, thanks for the replies to this thread although I feel now that I am back at square one having looked into all the suggestions mentioned. ‘Square one’ being saving up and paying for it in one go myself.
DAFMAD:
How far back can you go with these claims ? do you have to do a separate form for each year ? What if you haven’t got a paye code ?
you can claim back 7 years including current
no, all can be done by letter but you must list each year separately
ALL employees have a PAYE code (shown on pay advice/note) unless under limit for tax otherwise job not legit
(do you not mean a tax reference (usualy shown on pay advice/note) which you would get from your employer)
The “Professional and Career Development Loan” is available via a bank who agrees to lend you the money. Once you have completed the training you have to start paying it back.
So, if you were unemployed and wanted to add a skill like ADR or FLT…a) you would be very unlikely to get a bank to agree the loan in the first place, and b) you would have to start paying it back once the training is finished.
Absolutely useless for those who are unemployed, which are probably those who are going to benefit most from the training!
The CDL was out for me as said earlier and in the above messages so I carried on hassling DWP and JC until I ‘found’ this buried in their own web site…
if you’re unemployed (that’s me) AND over 50 years old then instead of the CDL there is a scheme which I have been told by JC today is available and covers LGV licences as well as ADR, Hiab etc etc.
For me it is, 26 weeks unemployed age 56 so: 1500 for training, 50 per week for 16 weeks to get you going again, 250 for signing off the dole and working tax credit that is more than the dole payment was each week. There is also Advisors discretionary payment for more training up to 300 on top.
You have to sign off, (easiest as self employed) before training, ie the Fri if training on the Mon. No prob for me as this means with the above I am 50 per week better of than the dole and can work any part time legally without being pulled as whatever you earn does not affect any of the above. The first thing to change is the working tax credit in the next year dependent on your earnings this year.
I found all this out and then went to JC with all their own info, ‘Oh yes, you may be right, let’s check’
There are other schemes that are available for training funding whether you are in work or not but if my experience is anything to go by you need to get most of the detail from JC or DWP website and take it to them.

I’m also going for my ADR on the 23rd Nov, funded by the government. I’m disabled and was made redundant in June and have got 100% funding for the course, as there’s money set aside to help disabled people back into work.
Just an update.
Finished my course on friday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sat core, 2 3 4 5 6 8 9 + tanks exams and I think I’ve got them all but won’t know for 3 weeks.
Thank god for the funding!
It might be worth bearing in mind that now we have increasing numbers of unemployed people, the government won’t be too keen on paying out all those unemployment benefits, and will hopefully start setting up more training funds for the sort of courses/licences people are talking about on here. Just need to keep an ear out on the news/down the jobcentre

any advice on what to do next ■■?
get the booklet that came with your form, photocopy and highlight the bits that concern your claim and send it with another form.
three attempts is the norm. if not see your mp because it’s a legitamate expense.
