Hi chris_g,

As pointed out already, ADR Class 2 is gases.

To answer your question on Class 2.2, I’ll explain that Class 2 is subdivided into 3 sub-divisions.

UN Class 2

2.1

2.2

2.3

As you can see, Class 2.2 is gases which are neither flammable, nor toxic.

You can transport gases of Class 2.2 up to 1,000 liters/kg nett (not counting the weight of the cylinders) without an ADR licence.

The minimum ADR licence for gases is:
Core module
Packages module, and
UN Class 2.
It is not possible to split a Class, so your minimum would be to take ‘all’ of Class 2 to get the ADR entitlement you need.

The way that most ADR providers offer this course would (probably) need you to attend for all of a Monday, most of a Tuesday and 1.5 hrs on a Wednesday. Then you’d need to attend on the Thursday for about 1.5 hrs to take the three required exams.

Some ADR providers have a dispensation to cover just the ‘gas’ course in two whole days, which makes it mess up your week a bit less.

If you can say roughly where you are in the country and your preferred travelling distance to a course, I could give you some contact details of ADR providers in your area.

I hope this helps.

Dave. I have tagged this question onto the end of this thread to “save paper”

I have just studied both January and February 2011 CDG prosecutions and discovered a couple of anomalies.

Does each driver carrying an ADR load require their own torch or Portable Lighting Apparatus. Kent police have prosecuted a Lithuanian and a Romanian for this “offence”

In the same week , a local company from Ashford was prosecuted for not having a torch and one defective warning lamp. This suggests to me that it was not just a mistake in the prosecution. Should we carry a spare torch just in case we come across some other kentish men?

Wheel Nut:

Hi Malc,
I’m not sure of the exact circumstances of the alleged offence, but I can say that the requirement for portable lighting apparatus applies per person, so if there were two people on board (no matter whether they are both drivers, then the police were correct to prosecute. (It’s a slam-dunk.)

This looks a bit like what brit pete was arguing a few months ago.
The requirement is for functioning equipment, but there’s nothing in ADR about carrying spare bulbs or batteries. As I pointed out to Pete at the time, it’s common sense to carry some bits and bobs of spares, but it’s not an actual legal requirement.

I’m guessing that “warning lamp” means an amber flashing light??
If so, they are allowed by ADR as they meet the requirement for “self standing warning signs” and there must be a minimum of two on board a vehicle when subject to full ADR.

I always suggest that companies adopt a low-tech approach to the requirement for self-standing warning signs, becuase batteries can go flat and bulbs can pop. My suggestion would be two folding triangles as they also meet the ADR requirements and take up very little space.

Your lucky numbers are: 8.1.5.2

Thank You., especially about 2 working torches!
