ADR Class 7

Is there anyone on here who has done the ADR class 7 training for Radioactives ?

Would like to know what it entails. The course costs 1,000 euros, 3 days here in Cherbourg.

If you have a definite need for Class 7, then go for it I’d say, but if you’re doing it just because you fancy it, that’s a lot of money. But… if like me you love science, then it is interesting.

Think of it like a standard ADR you’d do for just one class where you do Core, Packages and that Class. It’s just that it’s a lot more specifically focussed.

There’s two paper exercises: one on safe stowage, the other is the emergency exercise, similar to what you’ll have done with packages and/or tanks), plus the multiple choice exam at the end.

Basically you’ll cover
What is radioactive material?
What effects can it have?
How can it safely be transported?
What is the driver’s role in ensuring safety?
What should be done in an emergency?
Who uses it?
How is it used?

There’s a chunk of stuff about the regs, not only ADR, IMDG etc but also stuff derived from the IAEA

You’ll do a bit of science, ie protons, neutrons etc, Ionizing verses non-ionizing radiation, the units used eg Bequerels, Sieverts etc

Also the Transport Index (kinda like the Transport Categories in a way)

Also Packages, but different to the standard packages obviously, Labelling and Marking (again, should be moderately familiar)
Also some elements of the Core module, as it is possible to take your ADR just to have Class 7

Hope that helps

Thanks Zac. Very helpful.

I am doing it as i have a training allowance and nothing to spend it on as well as being interested in it. The travel and hotel is paid too, as well as the cost of the course.
I have Class 1 and the rest for work, but not 7.
There are firms advertising for drivers to do class 7 here, as it’s a rare thing but with the number of nuclear plants there is work.

It is a three day at a university and the nuclear plant in Cherbourg, in French obviously.

How much did your course cost and how long was it?

Hi Owen,

I’ve no idea what it’s like to do Class 7 over there in France, but it’s only one day here and there’s no need to go to a university or college to do it!

In the UK, Class 7 tends to be a very closed shop and a rather expensive qualification to obtain, so my usual advice to people who ask is that they shouldn’t pay for it themselves. Get your own ADR card (over here) by all means, but the people who want Class 7 stuff carrying are usually quite happy to pay for the drivers to get qualified.

In the UK, it is possible to do an ADR Core module and the Class 7 module without the tanks/packs module, so that would be 2.5 days in total + 2 multi-choice exams of 25 questions per exam.

As for cost, I’d guess at £250ish for the Class 7 addition if you’ve already got an ADR card.

BTW, Class 1 works in exactly the same way too.

That would be a “northern price” Darn Sarf they’re advertised at £365, and that’s just as an additional class :open_mouth:

The comparison between courses, days and cost is varied there. Here, the options are very very limited but the quality is very high as is the cost.
1000 e initial and 800 e renewal.
You have to have adr base before a person could be accepted on the class 7 course. No package option here.

AFAIK, ADR ‘base’ (‘basic’ or ‘basis’ depending on language) is what we call Core, Packs and seven (of the 9) UN Classes.

What qualification does a driver get if they do just ADR ‘base’ in France please?

Initial / base covers core and packages - 3 days -

Tanks - 4 days.

Class 1 Explosives - 2 Days
Class 7 - 3 days
Renewals take less time obviously.

This is the index page of the adr book to give you an idea of the course content. Hope this answers your question Dave.

There’s one difference, in the UK Core plus Packages doesn’t count for anything unless you have one valid class, and it only takes a tad less than 2 days to do those parts. Some people attend two days (plus exam day) and gain a valid ADR Class 2 Certificate

In the UK if you don’t get Core, Packages and at least one valid Class, then you only have 16 weeks to gain a valid certificate before the passes you’ve achieved expire.

Truthfully, I’d spend a lot longer on Packages if I had the option, people find it hard to get their heads around it.

Not worth the effort.
I had ADR for all classes but no company who bothered about any regulations.
For example. Trailer full stuff and when I researched everyone went mad. When I showed them that it is declared as highly infectious and there is no exemption from carrying under ADR they gave the load to someone without ADR.
Next Time they wanted to carry 30 liter racing Benzin as ADR. Class 7 got carried with a Van and second Man without license.
And no one will pay you more as if you have not wasted time and money.

This is why we have the DVSA, because certain companies and drivers see the law as an inconvenience.

This is also why the DVSA have an “intelligence unit” where companies breaking the law can be reported
gov.uk/guidance/report-a-lo … or-company

:bulb: Would that be BMVIT ?
