ADR Class 7 Radioactive

Hi all,

I’m after some info and advice please if anyone can help:

I’m soon looking to do my ADR licence and am looking to complete the explosives and radioactive classes aswell. Can anyone shed any light on who you could approach for freelance work for radioactive work and what sort of pay a driver could expect for transporting class 7 material. I’ve heard many different reports of pay and would like a better idea of what could be earned and how you go about it.

I live in the Southampton area but from my research there doesn’t seem to be any class 7 transport companies in this area whether van or class 1.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Matt

i took my explosives part but it didn`t affect my wages at all

to be actually very honest if there are no companies around you then dont bother, and the other point i would expect the best jobs would be well tucked up with drivers being trained up from within the company. secondly i expect if the truth be known they would proberly expect you do the radioactive stuff for the same money as a tesco job.

Think you have answered you own question there if there is no work pointless doing class 7 it is quite specialised as you will know & do you really need it  as from what I know the course is only run a few times a year & can be quite expensive to do although only 1 extra day for it

I think a lot of radioactive would come out of the likes of Sellafield

But if you wait then Deiseldave might be able to shed some light on some of this as he is the “Oracle” on here for ADR

Thanks all, i know it probably seems stupid if theres no companies around, but some of the wage reports i’d heard would make it worthwhile to travel 100 miles to get to a company! But on the other hand tesco wages may well be right!

The only company i can think of doing radioactive transport,is cavewood i know they used to run a 17tonner.Over night to Brussel’s, dont know if they still do because they used to use P & O ferries i haven’t been on there for a long time. The only other firm you could try is british neucler fuels have a look on google for them, best of look fella rather you than me

I bet diesel Dave can manage to fit his favourite word into this post. Begins with S and ends with M

To be honest I wouldn’t bother doing either Explosives or Radioactive unless you do need it. let the company pay for it. I doubt agencies are going to be offering a driver with 7 and 1

Bowkers and Barkers do a bit of Radioactive work for BNF

IIRC when I was on my course there was another Lady doing it she worked for Containerlifts & she had done the radioactive course as they were doing some

Try the samworth brothers they carry ginsters pasties, im sure they are radioactive.

Thanks everyone for your input, i’ll give containerlift a try as ive had quite a bit of container experience, just had a look at their website and didnt realise they did it. I like the comment about ginsters pasties, very true!

Hi Matt,

For ADR in Southampton, there’s really only one option unless you fancy a longish commute for 4 or 5 days.
All the info you need is here: http://www.roadsafeeurope.com
:bulb: Keith is your man, and if you get in contact, please tell him that I sent you.

TBH mate, it’s probably not worth the extra expense involved in getting UN Classes 1 or 7, because they’re very specialised and (usually) relatively expensive. If you were at a company that needed those entitlements, they’d send you on the relevant specialised course. Still with honesty in mind, I also suggest that you could save some money on the tanker module of an ADR course, because it’s unlikely (but not impossible) that you’d be offered a tanker job if you have no experience of tankers first, either on non-haz tankers or at least having carried dangerous goods of some kind previously.

Could I suggest that you do some market research from the other advice offered by posters before you make a decision on UN Classes 1 and/or 7■■
From a legal point of view, you can do the ‘normal’ ADR course, then add tankers and/or Class 1 and/or Class 7 at any time you like, because it doesn’t have to all be done at one go.

I hope this helps.

thanks dave, i know about roadsafe, i started my cpc with them last year and they’re quite good - and cheap! i have been looking into the comments of other people in particular containerlift. I plan to do everything apart from 1 and 7 to start, this way i can include it as part of cpc aswell and then depending what i could find out about 1 and 7 maybe add on later. As i’ve been struggling to find out about the extra 2 classes i thought i’d ask for some advice from drivers with more experience than me on here first before i did actually spend out on 1 and 7 as much as i’d like to have the lot i’m thinking of 5 years time when it comes to refreshing them!

I’d left a message with roadsafe earlier but i will mention you aswell when i get a call back.

Thanks again to everyone for your help

Hi Matt,

Just so you know…
You can’t get DCPC hours for UN Classes 1 or 7 from any ADR provider, because they’re both counted as ‘specialisms.’ Not every ADR provider offers DCPC hours for the tanker module, so it’s fair to say that there are probably only 21 DCPC hours available for the ADR course that you’re considering.

The ADR course dates are on the Roadsafe website.

bowkers of preston and hull do most of the nuclear work up here in the northwest.they have a team of regular drivers who do it week in week out very hard to get on to.but well paid i heard.
