Additional trailer identification plate

I’m noticing more and more secondary trailer plates on a white background with a G or N prefix followed by a seven figure number
Usually on a fridge trailer but just seen one on a Suttons tanker
Anyone throw any light on what they are there for?

That’s brilliant, thanks for that, it explains why I’ve seen it on Scottish seafood fridge trailers going down the M6, they’re all going to the South Coast ferries
I watched an interesting programme on BBC2 last night which was looking at the UK seafoods industry and exports/imports and I noticed this plate on the trailer loaded up in the western highlands full of live crevette (little lobsters)bound for France

You’re welcome Bigdave

Funny really been meaning to ask the same question for some time myself as I’ve seen the same plates at the channel ports for a while now.
You making the post actually gave me the incentive to actually look for the information to give you a reply.

gov.uk/guidance/trailer-registration

Any trailer over 3.5t needs to be registered. Just another money making scam.

It costs:
£26 to register a trailer for the first time
£21 to issue a new registration certificate for a new registered keeper
£10 for a replacement UK trailer registration certificate

They don’t need to add another Id number to the trailer. They already have an mot reg number I.e. C123456.

Most operaters fit the number to where the trailer plate would normally be.

I disagree, every trailer, caravan, and drawbar unit should be registered and insured, if you run up the arse of one in a lay by that is uncoupled needs ID.

I do agree with you we should treat all trailers as vehicles, but slapping another ID plate on it when we have a perfectly adequate system that is used for the dvsa for MOTs is a just a form of money making in my view.

Then why bother with number plates at all on any vehicle? I mean every car/van/truck etc has a VIN which is used on an MOT and can be checked and so on so it could just go round and round and round.
