Did anyone see the programme Ace Cafe Reunion this weekend? It was great seeing the bikers and their machines. Don’t know when it was filmed. Sadly Miss Dynamite was killed 5 miles out of Brighton. Rest in Peace, and sure she will be missed by all who knew her.
Didn’t see the reunion but I did see an old film on TV recently starring Rita Tushingham, Dudley Sutton and a bloke whose name escapes me, as bikers whose lives revolved around the Ace and featured a race to Newcastle and back.
Although I did go through a short moto stage (250 C15 Beezer) my main memory of the Ace is as a transport caff. There was some evidence in the film, a Commer (I think) artic pulling up in the background but also some interesting commercials trundling along the N. Circular.
Oh, and a young Johnny Briggs, late of Coro, was in it too.
Ah the Ace Cafe!! The only thing that I miss having moved from London this year is the Ace.
It always gave me a great kick to just jump into the car and 20 minutes took me to the Ace to listen to the band, have a burger, or just hang out.
Other half and I also loved going on the ace reunion runs to Brighton on our Honda Goldwing.
They also do a Spring bike run to Southend thats not quite so big as the Brighton run but hopefully we may find the time to get onto that next spring.
Nothing like living the old days and the Ace is Nostalgia with a capiatal ‘N’
Is it this Ace Cafe■■
That’s the one Simon, but as I said before it is as a driver that I remember the Ace. It was a regular stop for me in the ‘60s and I always remember the frequent difficulty finding a space.
The picture in the ‘history’ of the wagons parked brings this aspect home.
I see Fitzpatrick’s Highwayman parked opposite, and was that Davis Bros.’ Comet with meat container on the forecourt? And what was that single axle artic and the 4 wheeler?
Even the little Bedford passing by brings back memories of the first truck I drove in OZ.
The history also jogged my memory of the film ‘The Leather Boys’ and its star, Colin Campbell.
