Accountants....

Basically seeing what sort of money people for theirs?
Do you use them for everything? or just certain things?

It depends on your ability to do the day to day accounting and deal will the basic stuff with HMRC, that will determine your accountant fees. If you don’t want to spend 12hrs+ out on the road then come home and deal with spreadsheets, form filling etc. You’ll end up getting the accountant to do it all for you. With fees that reflect that. Likewise various accounts specialise in different types of trades, so you’ll find some accountants won’t touch us wil a barge pole but will happily do the books for builders etc.
Personally I’m happy to do as much of mine as possible and only seeing the accountant at the end of year. HMRC make most task simple and are more than happy to help with enquiries

In my experience your accountants bill will be directly linked to your ability to pay. :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

My first accountants desk was as big as my truck when I needed one, recommended by a farmer friend of mine but soon swapped him for one with a smaller desk and a smaller bill.

My parents have a small business (30 part-time cleaning staff) and they pay £23/hour for a lady to do theres (shes self employed).

Like I said.

Dunno then?:

This one!!!

Fairly obviously if you just chuck a biscuit tin full of creased up, oily finger marked receipts at him/her once a year, there is a lot of time involved in sorting it all out & therefore a big bill.

On the other hand, if you keep a neat and tidy set of books with all receipts & income entered totalled up month by month, and have submitted your own VAT returns every 1/4, your bill will be a lot less.

I believe some large co’s now charge over £200 just to complete & submit a self assessment form.

Its not necessary to use a chartered accountant, that alone can save considerable £££.

When I was an O/D I tried to do everything myself. That doesn’t work, its better that you get on with what you do and are (hopefully) good at, and let someone else who specialises in their own job do their bit.
(Unless you are lucky enough to have a wife/family member who is good at paper work & record keeping).

Go round and get quotes and make sure you know exactly what they are going to do for their fee. Basically, the more you do, the less you should pay!

350 quid for ltd company accounts and they do everything

Mine charges around £150 for my self employed stuff, and then £300 for the farm partnership with one of the partner an overseas resident. Previous one charged around £500 for the farm alone.

For me it all depends on what he saves you as well.
