Appeal: Fatal Road Traffic Collision, M1 Motorway

Police are appealing for witnesses after a fatal road traffic collision on the M1 on Wednesday evening.
The incident happened at around 6.42pm on the northbound carriageway just before junction 38 and involved multiple vehicles.
There were four vehicles at the scene - a white van, green Honda Civic, black Vauxhall Astra and a yellow Honda Civic.
The driver and passenger of one of the vehicles were trapped in their vehicle. The male passenger was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries which later proved fatal.
The deceased was from the Sheffield area.
The male driver was taken to Pinderfields hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
Police are appealing for any witnesses who saw the movements of the vehicles immediately before the incident to come forward.
As a result of the incident the southbound carriageway of the M1 was closed for one hour. The northbound carriageway was closed for 9 hours.

A total of 10 people - all of whom are male - have been arrested in connection with the incident. One has been released on police bail and the other 9 remain in police custody
it looked a nasty accident as i drove passed southbound. but why have they arrested 10 people!!!.
