All that Juddian said. Here is a letter that I put in after a run in with one of our stores. Names and locations removed replaced with ***
Tension at ******** store *** 30 March 2012.
Statement of ***** ******* - Driver of run No135
I asked the 1 remaining staff member assisting me if there was someone available to assist with loading the remaining cage returns.
He said no and told me that he finished work at 23:30. I asked “If I get into trouble where does my help come from?”
He replied that “Every other driver does it.”
Never had any more trouble with getting assistance at this store.
At least it was procedure for you to get help. This was always a slight annoyance of mine when I used to deliver Milk to supermarkets.
I would pull up behind the store wagon who was there before me and watch the shop staff assist the unloading and reloading of cages. The driver would never leave the back of the wagon. Then, when he had gone and it was my turn there was never any prospect of help, had to do it all myself. Ask for help and you just got a funny look, you were only a direct driver.
Not that it was particularly stressful work, but I just found it strange that it’s ‘unsafe’ for the supermarkets own drivers to unload cages themselves, but not a problem for me to lug heavy trolleys into the shop and reload empties on my own.
Be polite. Sickly polite. they hate it.

Best bit is pretending to ring in and telling them the delivery has been refused as they are having a bad day or some such ■■■■■■■■…

What about the Audi stores. You have to open there shutters and work there ramp. Then get the milk from the lorry that is leaning down a ramp and then reload the empties. You then have to put it in there fridge for them and chase down the person to sign for it. There own drivers have to do it as well.
Tesco staff help there drivers but refuse to help others
Sainsbury’s seem to help you, like the one in Kempston, Bedford. unloads the milk and loads the empties on for you, which made the job easy.
yep be over polite and it gets them steaming,
i once did a delivery though with a drivers mate to a restaurant, mate went in with a trolley of stuff and i was on back of truck, heard a door slam and raised voices looked up and one of restaurant workers was shouting at my mate waving a large knife about and trying to grab hold of him… lucklily some of the restaurant staff got old of their worker whilst i was busy just getting cab unlocked and mate inside it out the way… all because mate refused to put the stuff away for him which end of the day was,nt our job to do, but police were called and he was arrested for threatening behaviour…
Every circus has got a clown, just ignore it. It happens in most loading/delivery places.

Balls to that. I always just put ‘No authorised customer present’ on the handheld/paperwork, stuck the note in with the milk and cleared off. Not as if they ever checked it, they couldn’t give a monkeys.

I often encounter abusive customers or members off the public who find it acceptable to speak to me like I’m a piece off [zb],I am polite and well mannered by nature but do have a short temper I try my hardest to just bite my tongue. I’m pretty well educated and not a simpleton I tell them I do this job out off choice not because I’m to thick to do anything else so I do not appreciate being spoken to like an idiot. Once they realise your not an idiot who will take there [zb] they usually back off I do my job smile say thank you an wish them a good remainder to there day I find this more satisfactory then scooping to there level and kicking off with them people hate you having a happy cheerful day when they are not
A man after my own heart.
Had a 10am delivery in Salford but didn’t tip at notts till 0800 got to Salford at 1230 wasn’t rushing the load over the woodhead. eny fule can sea yoov made a load off spelling and granmar misteaks
I was on containers for some yrs and the customers you meet some were great just back on here drive and a apology that it would take 4 hours, then the ones that its a god given rite that you come as there skivvy to unload there box…any abuse i just shut the doors and drive off…i just wave to them…there faces are a picture.
Just be nice to abusive customers, keep calm and ask them questions like…
Are you going on holiday this year?
Have you had a good weekend/any plans for weekend?
Did you watch the football/rugby/grand prix?
Then as you are leaving say something like…
You’ve been fantastic!
Missing you already!
Catch ya later!
I have one now. I got to a Morrison store as planned at 05.15 only to be met with mr happy moaning that I was too early as the forklift driver didn’t start till 7. That’s why they have scissor lifts as well. I just smiled, reversed onto the lift and sat in my cab. So far he’s done about 8 pallets out of 26 and he has to reload it. I don’t care, I’m paid per hour and its my only drop today

I Know how you feel mate…get it ALL THE TIME!!! I just ask ‘Are you refusing the delivery?’
Soon sorts it all out!!!
Yep, I did that a few weeks ago. “It’s no good, you’re 30 minutes late” he said. So you don’t want me to take it, was my response.
I ended up taking it. It said team leader on his hi-viz, think he was just flexing his muscles a bit.
