About the car transporters

Im thinking about it, I’m not asking about wages, but I’d be interested in how difficult a job it actually is loading vehicles and so on, any info appreciated

juddian is your man for this. I did it for 1 yr and once you get a system it’s ok but still very physical. even more so since they changed securing the car from underneath to round the wheels.

OK, thanks

It’s never dry or warm when you are loading or unloading, you will be dripping wet through and sweating when you meet the most gorgeous saleswoman in a dealership, the deck will always be slippery and a hydraulic pipe will always burst on the most pristine surface you have seen.

And the receiving garage will always try and claim damage so they get free del thru compensation.

Sploom do a search for car transporters on the main forum mate, lots of good posts gone on over the years.

Yes it’s hard work, as for the loading itself that isn’t an issue for most lorry drivers, its deciding where to put them.
Time taken to learn the job, assume a year or more before you start to feel really comfortable, some lads pick it up in 3 months, some take 3 years and still can’t get their heads around it, worse now than ever because few simple bodies to learn on, generally you go straight onto an 11 car carrier and they are mind numbingly complicated to learn.

My main advice would be do not give up a good job for it, because the drop out rate is horrendous and other specialist work is paying just as well as well as usually easier.
It’s a marmite job, you either love it or hate it.
If it works out for you the earnings can be good, but like all jobs you’ll be starting off at the bottom and it might take you several years before you get onto one of the better outfits and/or the better terms agreement.
If you drive them for several years, that tends to make your CV stand out in the future.

What transporter work are you thinking of op ? Im currently doing salvage which is alot dirtier than new vehicles (im guessing). Salvage work can be quite tricky working out where to put what vehicle on the lorry. Different makes and models. But i agree, Juddian is the man to ask. He has given me realky good helpful advice in the past.

Thanks for all the replies and useful information, I wish it was salvage but its new cars and hire cars I’m looking at. It’s four on four off job which really makes the job more attractive, having four days off together.

Sploom if you don’t mind getting cold wet and dirty give it a go. I know 2 guys on transporters and they both love it. Obviously a more enjoyable job in summer. If you have half a brain you will pick it up within a month or two. One of the guys I know ain’t the brightest spark so if he can manage it most will. Pay can vary from company to company but mostly good.

Ah, OK, cheers, yes, I’ll give it a go, if they offer me the job.
