Abnormal load

Just watching somthing on youtube about the traffic agency. basicly they had shut a lane on a 2 lane stretch of motorway and low and behold a lorry with an abnomal load came along and apart from the 10 min of moaning about lorry drivers was a non event.

However i thought anythung over aprox 2.5 meters wide had to have permistion with a pre organised route. is this right ie is it the muppets in the traffic agency they screwed up

Pretty sure you only need that type of permissions and planned route over 12’ wide, I wait to be corrected, at least it was when I hauled wide loads, and over 14’ you needed police ■■■■■■ as well.

There’s a specialist heavy haulage firm in my town, I spent some time with them earlier this year finding out about the kind of stuff they do, it was quite an eye-opener; it’s a lot more complicated than people might imagine.

There’s the STGO cats 1, 2 & 3, then there’s the less well-known Vehicle Special Order movements. Interesting work, complicated operations but (it seems) very lucrative for those ‘in the know’.

Nope…you can run on dispensations from county police forces up to 12 feet wide. My wagon has a copy of a dispensation from each police force in the UK. All in a big folder that will expire every year on 31st December.
The exeption is the Metropolitan Police that require 48 hours notice and a route detail given to them.

You won’t get dispensation from every county. We have dispensation with Kent and Essex but Suffolk won’t play ball

I will show you a copy of my dispensation from Suffolk if you like. I have a rather large folder wih a dispensation with EVERY police force in the UK with the exeption of the Met Police.

One of our drivers got pulled by Essex police once. Our transport manager dropped a clanger and Essex was the only county that he forgot to apply for a yearly dispensation. The driver had to wait whilst said manager had to quickly put in the dispensation to Essex police. Once the dispensation was cleared the driver was released to carry on back to yard. I think the process took about 3 hours resolve.

All our pacton flat trailers are as close to 2.60 as you will get of which we have over a thousand. And yes it’s a European firm I work for and trailers are all Dutch registered

So, they are not 2.6 wide then?

isn`t so?
And

Happy Christmas.

Franglais: I’m really not sure what ur are arguing about I’ve told you our flat trailers are 2.6 wide and that is to the edge of the rave these are Dutch built and registered Trailers. Although I don’t pull our Euroliner trailers too often I’m more than sure the bed on those are the same width also. 2.6 is above the 2.5 the OP thought may be abnormal.

trailers are 2.55mm max width except fridges which can go to 2.6m. If the trailer (Non-fridge) is measured at 2.6m, either its been measured wrong or its not to C&U regs.

Prime example of the need for the dcpc when you don’t know the width of your lorry let alone the regs

Over 2.9m wide or 305mm side overhang requires 2 days notice of route.

But as said you can get yearly dispensations, but they are not automatically granted to run upto 3.5m
