I’ve recently started doing abnormal long loads, my total length is upto 26m, sometimes shorter, but I stick out of normal bays by 2-3m even at my shortest! (About 1% or less of my work is wide load).
On trips I don’t know, I speak to the other driver who’s been doing it longer, but I also want to be self reliant and I work differently to how he does. That means I’m trying to figure out where all the Ab bays are on roads and services.
I’ve found a PDF created by the government that’s from 2008 and most of the spots have disappeared. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a7f1b69ed915d74e33f45f7/Location_of_Abnormal_Load_Laybys_-_1143.pdf
Is there anywhere I get something up-to-date that would help find places to park up during embargo or the night. I cover all of the UK (mainly eng/Scot/wal).
Any help appreciated
Thats about as up to date as it gets , couple of pointers for you Junc 28 M1 you cant stop unless your booked also there is a restriction on the bridges so you can only use the bay in your direction of travel, M62 between Ferry bridge and Goole isnt an official AB load parking area but Humberside/West Yorks allow its use.. The old abload waiting area at the M18/M180 Junc is no longer in use, travel 3/4 of a mile towards A1 and there is an area there that they will let you use, a junction that was never built.. Strensham abload area will be full of caravan transporters with loads barely wider than their wing mirrors. The Abload bay at the M4 A470 junc has to be booked as does Tamworth on the M42, M6/A500 bay is normally good to just use as is Junc 24 M1 but you are supposed to book themConeygarth and Exelby services have abload bays (you have to pay) but book the bays early as they will move you on if someone has booked the spot…. any MSA abload bay will be full of C&U trucks and the MSA staff wont move them so unless your police escorted you will have to either, ask them to move and get a mouthful, block them in or take up two bays in the main parking areas- do not overnight on the M74 abload bays at Beattock unless Police escorted they will ticket you- Wetherby southbound is good but gets busy. South Mimms is a joke dont even bother you wont get in 80% of the time hope thats a start but basically most of them are abused by non abnormal load trucks and no-one enforces them
