My start date is confirmed as next Monday. I’m looking forward to the change.

Hey Mucker85

How’s the job going?

I have an interview this week, any tips you can offer me?

Also what are the shift patterns/ hours like.

Do you keep the same recovery truck at home or do you have to collect and drop off at a local depot.

Sorry for all the questions but better to here from the horses mouth as it were than the corporate chat I’ll get at interview.

Thanks for you help.

Dav

Due to a muck up on my part it didn’t happen. I’ve got another interview myself this week so I’ve got my fingers crossed.

The truck will be based at a yard, most of them BT fleet yards. They will try to keep you sharing a truck with another driver but if ‘your’ truck isn’t back you will take another one. They are meticulously maintained and your daily defect check will be very thorough.

They are very hot on regulations and rules, they will train you their way, that is the way they want it done.

You will be asked to make some sales but you aren’t pressured into doing it but the targets are very reasonable.

When you applied it would have said the shift pattern you would be on. They will most likely be 5/3 or 4/3 (the 4/3 is Friday to Monday every week)
My roster had me on a month of nights and then a month of days.

There should be plenty of opportunities for overtime, a couple of hours each day and an extra day each week at overtime rate if it is available.

Go to the interview neat and tidy, i wear shirt and tie. be keen and willing to learn. take all the paperwork they have emailed you and don’t forget your driving cards, licence and passport. I was amazed one of the guys at my interview didn’t bring his driving licence!

Good luck, they are a very good company to work for and the have a lot to offer if you have something to give in return.

Where and when’s your interview?

Let me know how you get on.

Cheers for that mucker

Good luck with your interview, sorry it went pear shaped last time.

So are they 12hr shifts?

Will let you know how I go on.

It depends on what shift pattern you are on but I will probably be 12 hours ish.

You’ll soon discover how scary the hard shoulder really is. The sound of a vehicle running along the rumble strip towards you soon gets your undivided attention. That was the only thing I hated about the job really. Its a decent job that sometimes I wish I had just stayed. I was taken on as a seasonal driver and the offer was there to become permanent but I declined. I missed driving artics for some silly reason.

Be prepared for some weird and wonderful people in your cab.

If there is one light hearted piece of advive I can offer you, is never let a dog in your cab. I had a guy one night who had his dog with him when he broke down. He had the decency to ask if it was ok for his labrador to travel in the cab. I said it was no problem at all, but the dog ■■■■■■ all the way from Oban to Stirling. That tought me a lesson that did.

loved that about the dog ■■■■■■■,that cheered me up no end

Oh I forgot, NO dogs allowed in the cab.

Not even on a friday night?

A phenomenom I used to experience when working on recovery was trying to find somewhere to park up, somewhere quiet in a city centre during the early hours of the morning.

If you’re on the graveyard shift & somehow, just know that it’s not worth turning in for the night, then you find a quiet backstreet to park up & relax till the next job.

Except when you’re cruising for a good location to get 30mins shut eye, there’s all these skinny / skanky wretch’s jumping out of the shadows & practically grabbing your N/S door handle, it’s like you they think you were there last week when Gaz or Rob were on the nightshift !

When I worked for a garage doing recovery work we would share work phones. I would regularly get odd phone calls from mystery numbers asking when I was going to be round.
