Traffic chaos after man is hit by lorry on busy A80
Mar 16 2009

COMMUTERS suffered rush hour travel chaos today after a fatal accident closed one of Scotland’s busiest roads.

The A80, the main route north out of Glasgow, was shut after a pedestrian was killed when he was hit by a truck.

The man was hit by the vehicle as he walked on the busy road at the Auchenkilns interchange near ■■■■■■■■■■■■ North Lanarkshire, at around 4.25am.

Strathclyde Police said the road was closed northbound for several hours to allow investigations to take place, causing tailbacks.

A spokeswoman said diversions were put in place.

The A80 links Glasgow to Stirling and connects to the main routes to Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness.

The accident victim was 23 years old and died at the scene of the accident, police said.

The lorry driver was uninjured but “badly shaken”, a spokesman added.

A report is being sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

i spent 3 hours at a stand still because of this, i feel for the lorry driver - he’ll have to live with it forever - made me think -if i hadn’t had a half an hour break at hamilton services, it could have been me that hit the guy.

Thank god this road is being upgraded to a motorway , the narrow laybys , short on slips ,short off slips make this road a death trap :imp:

the main question is why was he walking on the a80 anyway? i know bits of it has paths and fair enough but most of it aint

i feel for the driver aswell.

I left the fruit market just the back of 06.00,but didn’t get held up at all.Thought it must have been a bad one though as it was mentioned on every R2 traffic bulletin till lunchtime.

My thoughts are also with the driver and the family and friends of the young man who died :frowning:

I spoke once with a psychologist, she was working with drivers and train drivers. She told me that such accident is much worse for a lorry driver, as he always blames himself “I could turn, I could do that, I could do something else…” while train drivers are going through that much easier “I could do nothing, I can’t jump off the tracks”.

:frowning: He needs much of support now.

I bet he was on the beer.Same reasons why I nearly hit someone at 3am on a Monday morning.Staggering up the A45.Only saw him at the last minute and nearly had him.

I reckon the A80 is one of the worst roads in Britain. Thank God it is getting an upgrade, but its going to be hell whilst its going on.

Anybody know why he was walking along the A80 in the first place?
