A75 speed merchants

i have driven from dumfries to gretna along the a75 many times. i have never had a wagon bigger than 440. i nearly always been running at 44t, chipliner, tipper, timber wagon. it is easily possible to sit on the limiter all the way. often pass wagons on this stretch even in my crappy stobart wagon.

on the hills i often get someone ‘pushing me on’ but as soon as i get on the flat or downhill, they drop back a bit. very rarely do i have a queue (spelt with a Q for the pedantic dicks) behind me. if i see a car behind me, i keep over and signal him past if safe.

if you dont like this stretch of road, tell your transport office it is too scarey for you and refuse to drive on it.

Someone with some sense, I always signal people past if its clear.

As for overtaking, slightly hard when your not driving at the time

Ahhh I see…passing the buck!
So as you were being driven in a crap car by a crap driver, why should the truck in front jump out of their way, just because of their overall crapness behind the wheel?

ajt:
Moving over showing manors and courtesy costs nothing

Manors? Is that a stately manor?

As you mentioned courtesy…do you barge other people out of the way in other queues? Such as a queue at the supermarket, shops or even a pub? I bet you don’t.

What happens in the supermarket queue is i say ‘‘excuse me’’ and they usually say sorry and move to one side. Normal life situation eh
I’m guessing as you don’t feel the need to move over, in the supermarket situation either, when someone asks you to move over you say ‘‘no, you will have to wait’’ ---- yeah right you do… :unamused:

As for overtaking. Folk should indeed overtake, it would make life a lot earier but as already mentioned, everyone runs bumper to bumper IN A QUEUE and if you get a couple of trucks behind the slow mover its game over unless you take the lot out in one go. In any case as much as people should overtake your the one causing the hold up. Your the problem NOT the folk behind.

For the record, the difference between 40 and 56mph, constant speed over 19 miles, is roughly 8.5 minutes not 3

56 mph over 19 miles = 17.73 mins (56 divided by 60 times 19)
40 mph over 19 mins = 12.66 mins (40 divided by 60 times 19)
difference of 5.07 mins

UNLESS my maths is out

Taken from this Rog:

Obviously time wise over distance only becomes relevant at a constant speed, something in the real world which never happens

So let me get this straight…in a queue at the supermarket checkout, you say ‘excuse me’ and push past other people?

ajt:

I don’t move over in a queue at the till…I just wait my turn like everyone else.

I won’t be bullied out of the way in a supermarket queue nor on the road.

And you still haven’t answered the question…why should I pull into a layby just because a crap driver in a crap car can’t overtake?

Can’t really imagine some driver ringing back to his gaffer and saying…“hey, Shamus, you can stick this run in future. There’s no way i’m gonna make it on time. All the wagons are doing 40mph and there’s no way i can get past the que. I’m gonna be late, and if its the same coming back i’ll miss the boat”
You really reckon someones gonna say that, or is that not what you meant?

On SCs I try to let cars by but quite often they sit up your arse where they can’t see ahead, effectively creating a longer ‘vehicle’ for other cars to overtake :unamused: :imp: :imp: and the whole thing backs up. When in a long line I try to leave sufficient gap in front of me so cars can at least leapfrog past me but generally on most roads if they see the long queue and just settle in for the long haul.

Happysack I’d love to see you go through the Dunraggit railway bridge on the limiter :open_mouth: last time I went through there there was a Montgomery’s rig on its side in a field.

As I mentioned before, trucks do the same :frowning:

Depends upon which thread you read. Some say we need to go faster on the A9/A90 as its dangerous with cars passing them, they want to go faster. Sounds like pulling over aint an option . Others say pull over.
My top tip for any of these roads is to just go and do what you can. Don;t look at your mirrors until you need to manoevre, that way you see nothing to give you any pressure. Pull the curtains foreward a bit and whack up the stereo.
I’ll take ten trucks impatiently up my arse anyday rather than a £60 FPN and three points. Couldn;t care less what they wanna do.

What I mean is no matter if you go 40 or 50 in your truck, I would like to do 60, so please leave a gaps between you to allow safe overtaking.

sorry my bad, not sure how your first sentence didn’t register

forgiven!

the 40mph s/c limit is dangerous and encourages people who want to run flat out to overtake the institutionalised “stereotypical tesco style” driver … I have used the A75 on a few occasions and always at night and all the boat boys and paddies crack on but sadly you come upon the odd “39 mph” truck and spend the next 15 minutes trying to get past because he seems to find a sudden burst of speed when a suitable stretch of road presents itself to overtake said vehicle …

In short stop running on like a pensioner who is scared of the vehicle and accept that if you drive at 40 your gonna spend your days being run off the road …

rant over …

Unlike the Italian in a rigid Iveco I came up behind on my way home from Gretna sitting at a steady 60 :open_mouth:

Only 60? Try overtaking them in Italy! :open_mouth:
