HAVE just read the following tunnels are closed from today Roertunnel A73 Venlo–Maastricht 2000hrs 02sep2009 UNTIL 01Dec2009…0600hrs ,Due to a complete overhaul of the tunnel safety equipment The Swalmentunnel will stay OPEN until 01 OCT,2009 , and will then CLOSED until 01Dec2009, please seek alternative route, and bear in mind so will everyone else, one possible route was mentioned , From Venlo use the N273 Napolonsweg AND then use the A2 by Maabracht, (which you can bet every one else will use as well)
Another alternative is the minor road running alongside the A73 - to the east of the river. The N273 is to the west of the river (Maas?).
A bit of a detour but presumably less busy would be the German B-road via Bruggen. Or even the A61 fo Monchengladbach and then 44 for Aachen.
Opportunities are endless, good advice - priceless
I really can’t understand what’s taking them so long, the A73 has been open now for,I think, over a year, and yet both the Swalmen and the Roermond tunnel have been down to single lanes since the motorway was opened, causing long tailbacks at peak times in both directions.
The problem is,the altenative, and original route, along the N273 just seems to clog up when the tunnels are closed,so to avoid the hassle I sometimes go up to Nederweert and cut across to the A67.

Those tunnels have been a joke from the outset.
Perhaps the Cloggies should stick to building dykes and leave the tunnels to them thar Alpine types…
End of an era.
Went past Venlo today and the border is just a huge building site, all the old customs and agents offices gone as well as the restaurant.
They have opened up a huge parking area just off the A67 past Venlo towards Eindhoven, but I couldn’t see any facilities there.
