A702 Edinburgh to M74 - is it just me or

Is it just me or is this a [zb] dangerous road if you’re not familiar with it? :open_mouth: Just came back from Edinburgh this morning and was on it about 0630-0730 in the dark with a fair amount of traffic coming the other way so not easy to see wtf is going on because of all the blinding lights. The problem seems to be that the Highways Agency (or whoever) can’t be arsed putting any signs up or arrow marker boards to warn of sharp bends :open_mouth: . It must’ve happened about 3 times where I was trundling down a long straight doing about 60-70mph and then suddenly I’m faced with a sharp 70 degree bend with no [zb] prior nor any of the black n white arrow marker boards :open_mouth: . After the third time I decided that I didn’t want to have a meeting with the ditches and drove along there like a [zb] grandad easing off to 45-50 mph with my foot poised over the brake pedal whenever I saw a bend looming, much to annoyance of everyone behind. I’m no slouch when it comes to get a shufty on down the back roads, but that is a seriously horrible road in the dark to those not familiar with it. I bet there’s been no shortage of folks that haven’t been so “lucky” and have ended up going backwards through hedges/ditches along there. :open_mouth:

Lot of tight bends, lot of artics 56mph flat out. You need to watch your offside mirror on that road or someone will rip it off. Most of the roads in the borders are nasty the A721 and the A72 are horrfic. When someone was designing that A72 they must have been half cut.

Yeah, noticed that everyone seems to drive down the middle of the road and expects you to move over other or lose your o/s mirror. I don’t mind moving over a bit but the edges of the road are full of crappy patches where the tarmac has been “repaired” and some of them are that deep/uneven they nearly pull the damned steering wheel out of your hands. :open_mouth:

Yeah I’ve just been up and down the a73 and that’s not brill after Lanark northbound! There’s a massive bump in the road just after forth and that nearly put me with a double deck trailer on it’s side! No warning!

Just goes to prove that you can’t have it all, free uni education, free prescriptions, ect and decent road surfaces.

Always drive at a speed that you can both see and safeley stop if need be…
You may need a visit to Specsavers too if you’re being blinded by lights.

I wear glasses and have done since I was a kid. Last year my optician asked me what I do and he suggested getting an anti glare coating on the lenses to stop bright lights in dark causing glare. Now I was a bit sceptical as it can happen but didnt really view it as an issue. Anyhow I got some with said coating on and wow best feww quid I spent in years they are amazing Ive done back to back tests in the dark with a normal pair I have and the differece is very noticable you get no glare at all brilliant!

I don’t know if you’ve met SABRE…

It’s nothing to do with the road itself - I am far from being a slouch when it comes to taking on challenging roads - it’s the complete lack of signage to warn you of sharp bends etc on the A702 that I was having a moan at. You’d expect that on some unclassified country road perhaps, but not on a major trunk road between a motorway and a big city. And for clarification as someone asked via PM, I was in my car, not a truck.
