Dozy has been unmasked…

Rob Hod, a driver for Eddie Stobart said: “I saw a yellow ‘diversion’ sign in place further up the road but it just seemed optional. There’s nothing telling you to turn around or that the road’s closed.”

I drove over it at 7am this morning and it looked fine so it must have happened not long after that.
Where I work is on the other side and I go over this every day. They’ve been trying to sort this for over a decade. 10 years ago they completely rebuilt the bridge and its been causing them problems ever since where its collapsed, they rebuilt that section once and have spent the last five years using packing more tarmac into the dip when the cracks appeared as their preferred solution. Quite why they’ve not been able to resolve it I don’t know because until they rebuilt the bridge they never had a problem. It had gone 20 years I’d been driving over it without a single issue.
I thought that it is a small stream that runs under the bank which was the cause of the issue but it may actually have been a burst water main which has only just reared its head.
As for ignoring the diversion sign I can understand why given recently they’ve had them been sat there for months as they got left up from when they were doing M62 J37-38 overnight closures as they do on most roadworks so people just get used to ignoring them during the day. They can’t put road closed signs at the roundabout because 200 yards up is where I work which has over 100 lorries a day going in and out. Guess I’m taking the scenic route to work.
Was on the news tonight. Its going to be closed for several weeks.

A mate of mine left Driffield at 7.30 and went over it and it was fine then but he did say there was a huge hole and he could see the burst water main. News reports said it was 8am when contractors discovered it which must have been just after my mate went over.
Like you’ve said the bridge has been subsiding for many years and the council have either ignore it or just filled in the subsidence as and when required. Unfortunately it will now cost them probably 3 times what it would have cost to actually do a proper report in the first place. Very frustrating as I use it a lot leaving Driffield. Looks like North Cliffe to North Cave in morning.
Matt.

Truck or car? If its car there’s a back road you can go down from that water tower on the right on those S bends before the straight with the pub on which takes you out at the golf club north of Howden. Hang a left, over the level crossing and you end up coming out in the middle of Howden.

Yeah in me truck mate. I cut down Portington bank holiday as they were queueing right back to Royal Oak pub to get through the lights on the bridge. I’ll go to Weighton and then down the Cliffe road onto 62 I think

Its only an extra 10 minutes at most so not the end of the world unless its Friday teatime heading coastbound then you’ll have all the mongs heading to the seaside crawling down it at 20MPH and it’ll be quicker to head all the way to the Humber Bridge.
The other option is to go to York and the A64/A1. To J29 M62 it takes the same time. To the A1/M18 junction there’s 5/10 minutes difference.
Is this Welham Bridge Conor?
Nessa:
Is this Welham Bridge Conor?
No its the railway bridge. You can get to Welham just fine from Holme on Spalding Moor.
Howden is getting pretty backed up during the day as the diversion route takes you straight through the middle of it and there are places where to cars can’t pass each other due to parked cars and a 90 degree bend that is so tight a truck needs both sides of the road so it can take over 15 minutes to do half a mile through the town so if you’re going further up the A614 my advice is to follow the diversion signs they put up on the motorway to follow for Driffield and Bridlington which take you further down the M62.
