A57 Mottram Moor Speed Camera

The green speed camera on the A57 Mottram Moor as you go up the hill on the two lane bit (westbound) towards Manchester, does it flash if you’ve been busted?

The reason I ask is because I wasn’t religiously checking my speed as I went past it and was probably doing 33/34mph, maybe 35mph at a push before I realised.

As I came by it I looked in my n/s mirror and saw a small red light on the camera illuminate for a second and then go out. It was like a single LED, not a large infra red glow like what you get from the overhead average speed cameras. When I went through the next one (just before the petrol station) I was doing below 30mph and I didn’t notice a red light that time, although I may have missed it.

What type of camera are these? Are they infra red or old school flash? Does the little red light come on everytime a vehicle passes regardless of speed or does it mean I’ve been busted? I wanted to go back and see for myself but didn’t have time.

I hope someone can help.

Looks like you’re okay.

Note: In Spring 2002, Tameside installed eight of what look like Gatsos on and around the A57 and A628 in the Mottram/Hollingworth area. They are painted dark green, are a little smaller than a standard Gatso, and in each case have a display board a short distance further up the road that flashes up a vehicle’s speed. Despite appearances, these are not Gatsos, and merely serve as “speed warners”. They cannot be used to prosecute drivers - but unless you are aware of the details, how are you to know that when approaching one? Some photos of one of these can be seen here. In early 2003 they were changed for a different and perhaps more robust design, but as far as I know their function remains the same.

The locations of these are as follows:

A560 eastbound, on one-laned dual carriageway section through Hattersley, approaching M67 roundabout. 40 limit
A57 westbound, just west of Mottram crossroads. 30 limit
A57 Mottram Moor eastbound, on dual carriageway between Mottram and Hollingworth. 30 limit, should be 40
A57 westbound, between Woolley Bridge roundabout and Hollingworth lights. 30 limit
A6018 eastbound, descending hill between Roe Cross and Mottram. 40 limit
A628 eastbound, in Hollingworth village. 30 limit
A628 westbound, shortly after entering Hollingworth village. 30 limit
unclass Broadbottom Road between Mottram and Broadbottom, southbound near Waggon pub. 30 limit, 40 would be more appropriate is this is a long, straight stretch only built up on one side. Also another southbound camera further down in the Broadbottom direction, within the recently-introduced 20 limit

AFAIK the limit is 30mph so if your doing 33/34/35 your busted … its NIP time

Pretty sure I have seen one flash

I would not worry too much if it did not flash either way

They’re not speed camera’s.

I had an altercation with another motorist MANY years ago when in my car, so chased him down the hill, he struck my car and jumped the red light.

I contacted the police to explain what had happened and asked if they could get the details off the camera, they told me that those cameras have no recording ability and are something to do with the council.

Don’t sweat it pal, I regularly go down and up there at over 30mph now - it’s a bloody daft 30 zone that 1.

The only correct answer will come by way of you crouching down by your letter box for the next few weeks/months.

Hope this helps.

Those are Watchman cameras.

Read all about them here.

I know it’s 30mph you muppet, I wouldn’t be asking if it was 40mph, would I?

…and who said lorry drivers were thick?

I hope this helps.

Shame it isn’t NIP time with an attitude like that

Dont worry about it,these arnt speed cameras, they are operated by tameside council to monitor traffic speed.
You can stop sweating now…
